都大研究发现中药丹参有效减低治癌西药副作用 中西合医促进治癌成效

香港都会大学(都大)研究发现传统中药丹参中的成分,能有助减低一种治癌药物诱发高血压的副作用,从而提升治疗效果。都大团队现正进一步研究丹参的最佳提取物及与抗癌西药同时使用的效果,预料研究成果将为中西医结合模式治疗癌症提供更有力的支持,为癌症病人对抗西药副作用带来曙光。

西药「贝伐珠单抗」(Bevacizumab)是治疗大肠癌或肺癌的第一线药物,透过抑制血管新生而产生抗癌作用。其常见副作用是诱发高血压。现时,虽有药物可针对「贝伐珠单抗」诱发的高血压,却同时会抑制其抗血管新生作用,减低治癌成效,医学界因此一直未有就治疗「贝伐珠单抗」诱发的高血压制订以实证为基础的指引。

由都大科技学院应用科学系助理教授及生物医学与生物科技课程主任黄诗韵博士领导的一项最新的研究发现,丹参的活跃成分丹参素能降低血压,同时不会影响「贝伐珠单抗」的治疗成效。临床上,丹参经常获中医用于治疗心血管疾病。最近,丹参的水溶性萃取物更被发现具有与西药「贝伐珠单抗」相近的特性,可抑制血管新生,能促进治癌成效。黄博士继而发现以不同方法萃取的丹参成分对癌症有不同的治疗效果,如以煎煮手法萃取丹参素、水溶性萃取方法或以溶剂提取等方法,对降低血压的成效不一。

除身兼教研职位,黄诗韵博士亦是一名注册中医师,又具备药理及药剂学博士学位资格,其教学及研究范围包括中医、药剂学、癌症治疗及血管生物学等,并重点研究中西药结合疗法。黄博士现时正致力于研究出最佳的丹参提取物,以及结合丹参与西药的疗法的效果,预期这项研究将大大改善抗癌药物「贝伐珠单抗」的应用。

这项研究由都大与香港大学李嘉诚医学院合作进行,并在研究资助局最新一轮「本地自资学位界别竞逐研究资助计划」中取得逾130万港元资助,研究实力备受肯定。

Hugo Leung Wai-yin, who graduated from his four-year programme in 2015, won the Best Paper Award for his ‘intelligent pill-dispenser’ design at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering’s International Conference on Consumer Electronics – China 2015.

The pill-dispenser alerts patients via sound and LED flashes to pre-set dosage and time intervals. Unlike units currently on the market, Hugo’s design connects to any mobile phone globally. In explaining how it works, he said: ‘There are three layers in the portable pillbox. The lowest level is a controller with various devices which can be connected to mobile phones in remote locations. Patients are alerted by a sound alarm and flashes. Should they fail to follow their prescribed regime, data can be sent via SMS to relatives and friends for follow up.’ The pill-dispenser has four medicine slots, plus a back-up with a LED alert, topped by a 500ml water bottle. It took Hugo three months of research and coding to complete his design, but he feels it was worth all his time and effort.

Hugo’s public examination results were disappointing and he was at a loss about his future before enrolling at the OUHK, which he now realizes was a major turning point in his life. He is grateful for the OUHK’s learning environment, its industry links and the positive guidance and encouragement from his teachers. The University is now exploring the commercial potential of his design with a pharmaceutical company. He hopes that this will benefit the elderly and chronically ill, as well as the society at large.

Soon after completing his studies, Hugo joined an automation technology company as an assistant engineer. He is responsible for the design and development of automation devices. The target is to minimize human labor and increase the quality of products. He is developing products which are used in various sections, including healthcare, manufacturing and consumer electronics.
