研发截杀新冠病毒过滤技术

创新及科技局局长薛永恒今日(4月12日)到访香港都会大学(都大),了解大学的最新研究发展,并与管理层及科研人员就创科发展进行交流。

到访期间,都大校长林群声教授与嘉宾分享大学的科研成果,以及与业界伙伴的合作项目,包括大学参与研究及技术支援的C-POLAR空气过滤专利技术。

都大科技学院早前受世宝生科有限公司(C-POLAR Biotech Limited)委托,设计技术方案,用以测试他们研发的正极性聚合物的空气过滤效能,并进一步协助将技术应用于口罩、空调系统过滤网及其他产品。

大学科研人员及C-POLAR Biotech代表向薛局长,讲解研发技术及日后应用潜力,并展示成功研发的产品,及相关技术为香港社会及海外用户所带来的裨益。

都大参与的研究项目,科研团队透过反复测试,发现强正极性聚合物滤层,可有效截杀细菌及病毒,包括变种新冠病毒。团队表示,杀灭原理是以物理方法进行,有关技术不会产生细胞毒性,对人体无害。相关技术亦通过多间海外病毒实验室的测试,其功效已获验证,英国公营医疗服务机构已利用相关物料及技术,制造FFP3高防护口罩。

此外,本港多幢甲级商厦、大型购物商场和医院已试行装置该技术的空调滤网。结果证明,除有效截杀空气中的细菌及病毒,更可大幅改善压力下降情况,因而提升能源效益。有关的空气过滤技术早前已获政府资讯科技总监办公室举办的「2021香港资讯及通讯科技奖」颁发智慧生活大奖。都大科研团队将进一步推展项目,令技术应用至其他医疗及生活产品上,保障大众健康。

Hugo Leung Wai-yin, who graduated from his four-year programme in 2015, won the Best Paper Award for his ‘intelligent pill-dispenser’ design at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering’s International Conference on Consumer Electronics – China 2015.

The pill-dispenser alerts patients via sound and LED flashes to pre-set dosage and time intervals. Unlike units currently on the market, Hugo’s design connects to any mobile phone globally. In explaining how it works, he said: ‘There are three layers in the portable pillbox. The lowest level is a controller with various devices which can be connected to mobile phones in remote locations. Patients are alerted by a sound alarm and flashes. Should they fail to follow their prescribed regime, data can be sent via SMS to relatives and friends for follow up.’ The pill-dispenser has four medicine slots, plus a back-up with a LED alert, topped by a 500ml water bottle. It took Hugo three months of research and coding to complete his design, but he feels it was worth all his time and effort.

Hugo’s public examination results were disappointing and he was at a loss about his future before enrolling at the OUHK, which he now realizes was a major turning point in his life. He is grateful for the OUHK’s learning environment, its industry links and the positive guidance and encouragement from his teachers. The University is now exploring the commercial potential of his design with a pharmaceutical company. He hopes that this will benefit the elderly and chronically ill, as well as the society at large.

Soon after completing his studies, Hugo joined an automation technology company as an assistant engineer. He is responsible for the design and development of automation devices. The target is to minimize human labor and increase the quality of products. He is developing products which are used in various sections, including healthcare, manufacturing and consumer electronics.
