HKMU continues to lead funded programmes and places under the SSSDP among self-financing institutions, with all 10 Applied Degree programmes granted places


Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) has been granted 1,891 subsidised places across 21 programmes for the 2026/27 academic year under the latest round of the Education Bureau (EDB)’s Study Subsidy Scheme for Designated Professions/Sectors (SSSDP) for undergraduate programmes. This includes 1,177 places for 10 Applied Degree (APD) programmes. HKMU students awarded HSBC Scholarships


This year, seven outstanding HKMU students have been honoured as HSBC Scholars. Four of them were invited to celebrate their achievements at HSBC Scholars Day, held on 16 July.

Nursing student Chloe Lam Hei-tung and Professional Accounting student Liu Tsam-yi were awarded the HSBC Greater Bay Area (Hong Kong) Scholarship. Chau Kit-yi from the Chinese programme, So Wing-hei from the Physiotherapy programme, and Yip Tik-yung from the Data Science and Artificial Intelligence programme received the HSBC Hong Kong Scholarship. And Higher Diploma students Kwok Ching-ting and Shahzad Alishba were recognised with the HSBC Vocational Education Scholarship. ……..  View More

HKMU’s mental health first aid course raises confidence in over 90% of students in identifying mental health risk factors and supporting their peers

The first round of a 12-hour mental health first aid (MHFA) course at Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) showed encouraging results. The course evaluation survey indciates that over 90% of students reported increased confidence in identifying mental health risk factors and supporting others with mental health challenges. HKMU secures HK$77 million in funding to launch two new programmes in diagnostic radiography and robotics and automation engineering

Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) is committed to nurturing future talent through professional education, supporting Hong Kong as an international hub for high-calibre talents. In the latest round of the “Enhancement and Start-up Grant Scheme for Self-financing Post-secondary Education” (ESGS) by the Education Bureau, HKMU secured over HK$77 million in funding to establish two new undergraduate programmes in 2026/27: a Bachelor of Science with Honours (BSc(Hons)) in Diagnostic Radiography and a Bachelor of Applied Science with Honours (BAS(Hons)) in Robotics and Automation Engineering…..  View More

HKMU hosts the International Conference on Gerontechnology 2024 and “Gerontech Competition”, promoting innovative technology applications for better quality of life for older adults

Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) hosted the third edition of “International Conference on Gerontechnology (ICG) 2024” and the inaugural “Gerontech Competition”, in collaboration with the Association of Hong Kong Nursing Staff and Tung Wah College, to foster exchanges between the sector and academia for older adult services, and promote the application of innovative technology to enhance the quality of life of older adults in Hong Kong.

Supported by the Innovation and Technology Commission and the Wu Jieh Yee Charitable Foundation, the ICG 2024 took place from 11 to 13 December on the HKMU campus. The conference theme “Collaborating for the Future of Gerontechnology” underscored the growing importance of developing and implementing innovative technology to enhance the older adults’ quality of life. HKMU alumna named one of Ten Outstanding Young Persons

Hong Kong’s only female ice-climbing athlete and HKMU nursing graduate Janet Kung Tsz-shan was named one of the Ten Outstanding Young Persons (TOYP) in the Ten Outstanding Young Persons Selection 2024, in recognition of her achievements in ice climbing and other sports.

Last year, Janet represented Hong Kong in the 2023–2024 UIAA Ice Climbing World Cup, held in five countries, and placed sixth in the world ranking of Speed and 26th in Lead. She is also a two-time holder of the “Queen of the Buns” title, winning in the women’s group of the Cheung Chau Bun Scrambling Competition in 2019 and 2024. ….. View More

15 HKMU scholars recognised among the world’s top 2% of most-cited scientists, marking three years of continuous growth

Fifteen scholars from Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) were recently ranked among the top 2% of most-cited scientists worldwide by a research team from Stanford University. The list reflects and recognises the remarkable impact of the research output of HKMU scholars.

This year marks the third consecutive year of growth in the number of scholars named on the list, with an increase from five scholars three years ago to 15 this year.  View More

HKMU Scholar Co-Leads an International Study on a New Drug for Alzheimer’s Disease Using Nanotechnology and Gene Therapy

Alzheimer’s disease is the most prevalent form of dementia, profoundly impacting patients’ memory, cognition and self-care ability. Unfortunately, no cure has been identified so far for this devastating condition. Innovative Gerontech Product Design Claims Gold

Howard Duan Hantian, James Fong Cheuk-yeung and Lee Chun-leung from the School of Nursing and Health Studies (N&HS) partnered with Chen Shujun of the Lee Shau Kee School of Business and Administration (B&A) and designed an innovative product of gerontechnology — a smart pillow named Entrance of Your Dream, which aims to enhance the sleep quality of the elderly. With this design, the team then participated in the Hong Kong Applied Gerontech Challenge (HKAGIC) and stood out among other teams, winning a Gold Award in the Tertiary Group with a HK$5,000 cash prize. ….. View More

HKMU Physiotherapy Programme Receives Professional Accreditation; Graduates are Qualified to Practise as Registered Physiotherapists

Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) has officially received professional accreditation from the Physiotherapists Board of the Supplementary Medical Professions Council (SMPC) for its four-year Bachelor of Science with Honours in Physiotherapy programme, which was launched in 2020 to meet strong demand for healthcare professionals in Hong Kong. The first cohort of graduates are now qualified to practise as registered physiotherapists in Hong Kong and can apply for full membership in the Hong Kong Physiotherapy Association. ….. View More

Long-term HKMU Study Reveals Rising Health Risks of Oral Corticosteroid Use in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are often prescribed oral corticosteroids (OCSs) if there is a sudden deterioration in their condition. A scholar of the School of Nursing and Health Studies at Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) and related research team conducted a long-term study that unveils an increased risk of 17 diseases, including cardiovascular disease, associated with OCS use for COPD. The research team recommended exploring alternative treatments to minimise the possible side effects of using OCSs to alleviate the condition. ….. View More

School of Nursing and Health Studies Receives Volunteer Service Award for Promoting HA Go App

From May to September 2023, the School of Nursing and Health Studies (N&HS) collaborated with the Health Resource Centre of the Prince of Wales Hospital for a “HA Go” Ambassador Service Programme aimed at encouraging patients to install the mobile app “HA Go”, which connects patients beyond hospital care and enables patients to manage their own health.
