About this Programme

This programme is specifically designed for students who aspire to develop good English communication skills and to explore and analyse the structure and use of English in a range of contexts. Apart from studying courses on English language proficiency, students will also study English language use in different cultural settings, learn about the history of English and investigate its role as a world language.

What you will gain

By completing this programme, students will possess:

  • A high level of both written and spoken English proficiency (average band score for IELTS: 7.0).
  • In-depth knowledge of the English language system.
  • A critical ability and practical tools to analyse and appreciate language and literature in context.
  • Understanding of language and society and the role of English in the world.

Recognized qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree as both locally and internationally well recognized as other bachelor’s degrees in Hong
    Kong.
  • Recognized by EDB (Education Bureau) as an English language major degree.
  • Partial exemption from LPAT (Language Proficiency Assessment for Teachers).
  • Fully-qualified English teachers by also obtaining a PGDE, a teacher training qualification.

Overseas immersion programme: learning English and the British culture in a three-week Summer Immersion Programme in the UK

Overseas credit-bearing course: studying a 5-credit Intercultural Pragmatics course at the University of Warwick, UK

Wide variety of courses: courses on advanced English communication skills, English linguistics, applied English linguistics and English literary studies

Career Prospects & Further Studies


The skills gained through a study of the Bachelor of English Language Studies with Honours are highly valued in a broad range of careers. Having a well-developed ability to use English and to critically analyse language use will give graduates a competitive edge in a variety of career pathways, including: administration, business, media and teaching.
The degree is recognized by the Education Bureau of the Hong Kong SAR Government as a ‘language major degree’ for the purposes of qualification as an English teacher. In combination with a Postgraduate Diploma in Education majoring in English, the degree grants exemption from the Language Proficiency Requirement for Teachers of English in Hong Kong.


Many opportunities are available for graduates of the programme to undertake postgraduate studies in Hong Kong and overseas. Some students will continue to study for a Master’s degree by course work or by research in areas such as: linguistics, TESOL, translation and journalism.
Those who wish to enter the teaching profession can pursue their Postgraduate Diploma in Education studies either on a full-time basis or part-time while working full-time as a teacher.

Government's Subsidy Schemes & Scholarships

Students who fulfilled the stipulated requirements set by the Education Bureau (EDB) are eligible for the Non-means-tested Subsidy Scheme for Self-financing Undergraduate Studies in Hong Kong (NMTSS) provided by the HKSAR Government.  For details of the scheme and eligibility, please visit https://www.cspe.edu.hk/en/nmt/.

The University offers entrance scholarship to outstanding new students without requiring them to apply. Successful students may be awarded again in subsequent years of study, subject to outstanding performance at HKMU.
