Abstract

“Lin Yiliang” is one among a series of literary pseudonyms created by Stephen Soong (Song Qi, 1919-1996) after his relocation from Mainland to Hong Kong. They were symbolic embodiments of Soong's friendship and shared poetic ideals with Wu Xinghua (1921-1966), his lifelong confidant and fellow poet. The two men experienced the cataclysmic upheavals of mid-twentieth-century history, which ultimately severed their communication. Yet Soong's remembrance of this friendship remained deeply persistent. Through an analysis of these pseudonyms, and “Lin Yiliang” in particular, this study reveals how literary faith and the humanistic spirit attached to it can endure historical ruptures, circulating and evolving within new cultural contexts.
