The OUHK’s students and teachers once again gained recognition for their achievements in many different fields during the year. We are pleased to share some of these most outstanding accomplishments, together with details of the honours we presented to a number of exceptional members of the community.



Our students

Best Script Award

Remains, a short film produced by full-time Creative Writing and Film Arts students, received the Best Script Award (Student Division) in the Fresh Wave 2011 International Short Film Festival organized by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council. The entry was written and directed by Riley Leung, a Year 3 student, with supervision from Mr Dan Ip and Ms Venus Lai, Assistant Lecturers in the School of Arts and Social Sciences.


Prize in mathematical contest on modelling

A team of three students from the School of Science and Technology – Lau King-chi, Lau Wai-ho and Leung Kwok-man – won second prize in the 2011 Contemporary Undergraduate Mathematical Contest on Modelling. The largest of its kind in the world, the competition involved university teams from Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, the United States, Iran and mainland China.


Academic research recognized

Two student teams with a total of eight members from the School of Science and Technology won third place in the 12th National University Students Technology Challenge Cup Competition hosted by Dalian University of Technology in October 2011. The competition’s purpose is to nurture the academic research and writing skills of students, and to provide an exchange platform for Hong Kong and mainland students. The event attracted more than 1,000 entries from over 400 mainland institutions, plus 55 entries from 15 Hong Kong and Macau institutions. Both of our teams' research topics were related to harmful marine algae.

Water conservation design acclaimed

Wong Sai-wai, a full-time computing Year 1 student, was named First Runner-up at the award presentation ceremony for the Tertiary Education Student Group category of the Water Conservation Design Competition held in April 2011. The event was organized by the Water Supplies Department to promote water conservation.


Achievement in paper-writing contest

Alan Fung, a full-time computing Year 3 student, won the Second Runner-up title in the 2010 IEEE Hong Kong Section (Undergraduate) Student Paper Contest for his paper entitled ‘An Improved Resilient Propagation Algorithm by Introducing Deterministic Weight Modification’.


Community intern programme award

Yip Shing-pan, a full-time Year 3 student from the BBA in Banking and Finance programme, was among the eight recipients of Awards for Excellence in the Citi Community Intern Programme 2010–11. He was selected from among 70 participants in the programme, which was jointly organized by Citi Group and the Hong Kong Council of Social Service to inspire business students from local universities to contribute their knowledge and expertise to non-profit organizations and to cultivate their sense of corporate social responsibility. Each participant was required to complete 120 hours of work at a placement organization and submit a report.


Scholarships for education programme students

Seven students from the School of Education and Languages received the Au Bak Ling Charity Trust Scholarship, which was established for teachers-in-training who demonstrate outstanding academic performance and devotion to educating the younger generation.

Computing power

Our full-time computing students have participated in various contests and achieved encouraging results.


Year 1 students Fok Yiu-tung, Chan Ka-yan and Wong Yuk-chi received awards in the eXtremeWeb Design Competition organized by the Hong Kong Computer Society. Also, three teams of final year students reached the last round of the 2011 Amway IT Student Project Competition (Hong Kong); and a team of 12 students achieved good results in the ACMHK Programming Contest, in which they competed against other institutions in Hong Kong and throughout the region.



Our staff

Leader of the Year

The President, Prof. John C Y Leong, received the Leader of the Year award in the Education/Research category for his contribution to Hong Kong at the 18th Leader of the Year awards ceremony organized by Sing Tao News Corporation in March 2012.


Scientific personality

Prof. Ho Kin-chung, the Dean of the School of Science and Technology, was selected as one of the ‘Scientific Chinese – People of the Year 2010’ by the magazine Scientific Chinese. This title is bestowed on Chinese scientists who have made outstanding contributions to national scientific and technological development.

Biennial Award for Chinese Literature

Dr Chan Kit-yee, Assistant Professor in the School of Arts and Social Sciences, received a Biennial Award in the Literary Criticism Category for her work Hong Kong Fiction and Individual Memories at the 11th Hong Kong Biennial Awards for Chinese Literature.


Award for Best Artist

Ms Angela Law Tsin-fung, Lecturer in the School of Arts and Social Sciences, received the Award for Best Artist (Arts Criticism) at the Hong Kong Arts Development Awards 2010 Presentation Ceremony held in April 2011.



LiPACE achievements

Age-Friendly Star Award received

For the second consecutive year, the Elder Academy won an Age-Friendly Star Award from the Hong Kong Council of Social Service for its outstanding achievements in enhancing the quality of life of the elderly and promoting their participation in the community. The Academy, run by the Li Ka Shing Institute of Professional and Continuing Education (LiPACE), was also recognized for helping to bring about two of the eight essential features of age-friendly cities, namely ‘social participation’ and ‘respect and social inclusion’ by offering fee sponsorships, establishing a bursary system and launching the Active Elderly Learning Programme.

Project Yi Jin students top the league

Thirty-nine graduates of the Institute’s Project Yi Jin were presented with Sir Robert Black Trust Fund Scholarships for 2010–11, one of the highest number of recipients among providers of this programme.


Applied Learning Scholarships

In December 2011, Applied Learning Scholarships were presented to 26 LiPACE students, while eight students were awarded Certificates of Merit. The scholarships were established by the Education Bureau and Law’s Charitable Foundation to tie in with the Applied Learning programme under the New Senior Secondary Academic Structure.


Safety success

Chiu Wai-kuen came second in the Student Project Competition 2011 organized by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers. A Bachelor of Science (Honours) student in the Occupational Safety and Health (top-up) programme jointly offered by LiPACE and Middlesex University, UK, Chiu Wai-kuen received the honour for his project entitled ‘The Safety Awareness of Mixer Truck Drivers in Cleaning Trucks’. It was the second time LiPACE students have received awards in this competition.


Health and safety role acknowledged

Mr Alex Tse, Senior Programme Manager and Team Leader of the LiPACE Health and Social Sciences Team, was presented with the President’s Distinguished Service Certificate by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), UK, for his contributions to the profession in recent years.

Honorary awards

The OUHK awarded Honorary University Fellowships to five meritorious individuals during the year. They were Mr Peter Lo Chi-lik, a practising solicitor and partner of Woo Kwan Lee & Lo; Dr Anthony Lee Kai-yiu, Chief Hospital Manager and Medical Director of Union Hospital; Ms Shelley Lee Lai-kuen, former senior official in the Hong Kong Government who has served with distinction in various roles; Prof. Chen Zhi, a mainland scholar who has dedicated his career to teaching, scientific research and education management; and Prof. Patrick Lau Sau-shing, a renowned Hong Kong architect and former Head of the Department of Architecture at the University of Hong Kong.


During the 20th Congregation in December 2011, our Council Chairman, Dr Eddy C Fong, conferred Honorary Doctorates on four eminent individuals. They were Dr Simon Kwok Siu-ming, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Sa Sa International Holdings Ltd; Dr Alice Lam, an acclaimed banker and former Chairman of the University Grants Committee; Mr Li Rongrong, the first Chairman of the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council; and Mr Liu Yichang, a renowned author.
