President Prof. John C Y Leong received the degree of Doctor of Science honoris causa from the University of Hong Kong (HKU) at its 184th Congregation in recognition of his contributions to academia and Hong Kong. Prof. Leong has had a 38-year association with HKU. He gained his MBBS there in 1965, and served as Director of the Faculty of Medicine’s School of Postgraduate Medical Education and Training and as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine. He was also Chief of Service of the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology at Queen Mary Hospital, and Professor and Head of HKU’s Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.
The Asian College of Knowledge Management also conferred the title of Honorary Fellow on Prof. Leong, who at the presentation ceremony commended the college for its success in promoting knowledge management.
Prof. Ho Kin-chung, Dean of the School of Science and Technology, received the Award of Excellent Professionals in Environmental Science and Technology from the Chinese Society for Environmental Sciences for the third time. He was first given this biennial award in 2006, and gained it again in 2008 and, most recently, in December 2010. He was among the 120 environmental scientists and engineers from throughout China to be presented with the award.
Four members of our nursing staff received the AGD Shortlisted Prize at the 4th Ditan International Conference on Infectious Diseases held in Beijing in July 2010 for their research paper, ‘The Fitness of N95 Respirators among Undergraduate Chinese Nursing Students in Hong Kong’. The paper was presented by Nursing Lecturer Ms Caroline Charm for the team, which included Lecturers Mr Simon Lam and Ms Ivy Yau, as well as Associate Professor Dr Joseph Lee.
Our website received the Jade Prize at the Web Care Campaign 2010, making this the sixth Web Care award we have received since 2002. The campaign, which is organized by the Internet Professional Association, recognizes efforts to provide barrier-free access for the online needs of people with disabilities.
The Community Learning Programme Team at LiPACE received the President’s Award for Distinguished Achievement 2010, in recognition of their outstanding achievements in the Capacity Building Mileage Programme and the Elder Academy Project.
