A total of 34 activities, through which thousands of staff, students and alumni were mobilized to participate and assist in planning and implementation, were organized to celebrate the OUHK’s 20th Anniversary. Participants engaged in valuable intellectual exchange in conferences and seminars, covering topics that ranged from Ibsen, Asian Studies, outcome-based learning and quality teachers, to the financial tsunami, marketing strategies and scientific areas such as microfluidics, quantum theory and global environmental changes. Most of these activities were open to the public, as were competitions related to legal and literary translation, as well as the design of innovative e-learning tools. There were also cultural and non-academic activities such as concerts, open days, alumni gatherings, wine tasting workshops, and modelling and make-up shows for all to enjoy, moments for the OUHK to say thanks to our cherished friends. Two books were published, 20 Years of Innovative Education 1989-2009 and Dreams No Longer Far Away, which cover the University’s achievements over the last two decades and inspirational stories from 20 graduates, respectively. A commemorative Anniversary stamp pane was also produced. A Corridor of Learning with images of the OUHK’s past achievements was constructed along the space connecting the first and second phases of the Ho Man Tin campus, providing a walk down the University’s memory lane.

On 7 November 2009, over 800 students, alumni, staff, tutors and guests spent a joyous evening at our Anniversary Banquet, the climax of our Anniversary celebration. HKSAR Secretary for Justice and Guest of Honour, the Hon Wong Yan-lung, thanked the University for providing education opportunities to tens of thousands of learners, and wished it would remain a pride of Hong Kong in the years to come. Under the Banquet theme of ‘A Leap to Success’, OUHK mementos, creative videos and lifelong learning model families were showcased. Long service awards were presented to some 80 staff and tutors who have worked at the University for 10 or 20 years. Renowned scholar Prof. Jao Tsung-I wrote a piece of calligraphy for the Anniversary, which was presented as a gift to the University by Honorary Fellow Dr Winnie P S Ko. President’s wife Mrs Annie Leong donated ten sets of her signed cook books to commemorate the Anniversary and raise money for the Alumni Scholarship and Bursary Fund.

The ‘Serenading Mozart – Kolja Blacher Returns’ concert presented by the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra and sponsored by Lam Kin Chung Morning Sun Charity Fund was one of our Anniversary signature events. Masterpieces by Mozart, Tchaikovsky and Schumann were performed to a full house at the Concert Hall of the Hong Kong City Hall on 2 October 2009. Earlier, on 25 May, four members from the Orchestra treated some 100 staff and students to an intimate lunch hour performance of compositions from Mozart and Dvorak on the OUHK campus in Ho Man Tin.
