Acceptable Use Policy
The Open University of Hong Kong provides wireless LAN to students, tutors and staff on their notebook computers or other wireless mobile devices for web and email access.
Any use of the wireless LAN must be in accordance with the “Regulations on the Use of Electronic Data and Internet Access Facilities”. The regulations can be found on our Student Handbook.
In addition to the regulations, any network setup which affects other users or the normal operation of wireless LAN are prohibited such as: -
Setting up your own IP address
Setting up DHCP, DNS, BOOTP, WINS servers
Setting up routing or bridging between the wireless LAN and other networks
Port scanning or any other hacking activities
Setting up your own wireless access points
Due to limitation of current wireless LAN technology and implementation, it is not designed to provide the same level of service as our wired LAN in terms of security, performance, compatibility and reliability. Transferring high volume or confidential data are not recommended.
Last but not least, users should keep their computers updated with anti-virus signatures and Operating System (OS) patches. The University will not be responsible for any security or integrity of their systems.
