Retake Courses

Application for Retaking Courses in the 2026 Autumn Term

Application Period: 13 July 2026 (10:00am) – 17 July 2026 (5:00pm)

Students planning to retake any courses with a “Fail” result in the abovementioned term must submit an online application (each student is allowed to submit only ONE application) within the specified dates. Late application will NOT be processed.

If you have missed the retake application period, you may also submit an application including your retake courses during the add/drop period. Please note that early submission during the retake application period is recommended to avoid unnecessary enrolment delays.

Check Course Available to Retake
You can check the list of available courses during the specified term here (5-credit to be updated / 3-credit-unit to be updated) before submitting an application. Please note that this information is tentative and subject to change. Additionally, some courses may not be available for retake students, even if they are offered in the specified term. If your intended retake course is not included in the list, you should contact the course-offering School for details.

Students are normally not permitted to retake a course in which they have already attained a passing grade, except in the following situations:

  • For School of E&L: where a grade C or above in EDU 1100EEF, ENGL 2200EEF, ENGL 2210EEF and ENGL 3320EEF are required as a mandatory prerequisite for EDU 3399EEF or EDU 4400EEF for E&L students. The retake to meet these mandatory prerequisites will be arranged by School. Students do not need to submit a retake application.
  • For School of N&HS: where a grade C or above is mandatory for students in certain programmes and cohorts. For details, please read sections below.

Check Credit Load
You may refer to the General Requirement (5-credit system or 3-credit-units system) for the minimum and maximum credit load for full-time undergraduate programmes. It is also recommended that you review the “Advice on Course Selection” (or the special study plan provided by the University) before submitting your retake applications.

Follow the step-by-step instructions in the User Guide to complete the application form. Click the "Retake Application" function via MyHKMU (Programme > Classes & Enrolment > Enrolment-UG) to submit an application.

All applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Approval of an application will depend on the following factors:

  • the availability of course places
  • the student's class schedule
  • the fulfilment of prerequisite requirements
  • the endorsement by the relevant school

If your application is approved, the class section assigned for approved retake courses will depend on the availability of course places in individual class sections and the student's class schedule. Once a class section is assigned, requests for class section changes will NOT be entertained. Students who subsequently need to change the class section of a retake course due to changes in their timetables, but they are unable to change class section directly on the system. may email the Enrolment Team (Undergraduate) of Registry (regftae@hkmu.edu.hk) and indicate the exact class section wish to change to. Please note that only requests involving timetable clash will be entertained.

Retake results will be finalised before the term starts (i.e. before 1 Sep 2026). Students whose applications are approved will be assigned to an available class section of the course they applied for. Successfully enrolled course(s) will appear in your 'Academic Record' and 'Class Schedule' on MyHKMU . Students whose applications are unsuccessful will be notified by email.

If you have failed UNI A001BW, UNI A002BW, UNI A003BW or UNI A004BW, the University will automatically assign these module(s) in the next offering term for you, in other words, no retake application is required. The enrolment for these module(s) will appear in your "Academic Record" or "Class Schedule" on MyHKMU at the start of the term. If you are required to retake these module(s) but cannot view the enrolment status on MyHKMU by the start of the term, please contact the Enrolment Team (Undergraduate) at regftae@hkmu.edu.hk.

N&HS Students under the 5-credit system:

The retake of course(s) with a "Fail" grade will be arranged by the School.

Despite the above arrangement, all students must apply to retake any failed General Education (GE) courses as needed. Please refer to your programme requirements (5cr) to determine whether you need to complete these courses.

N&HS Students under the 3-credit-unit system:

The retake of core course(s) with a "Fail" grade will be arranged by the School except for students enrolled in the Bachelor of Science with Honours in Medical Laboratory Science (BSCHMLSJ) and Bachelor of Science with Honours in Diagnostic Radiography (BSCHDRJ). For BSCHMLSJ and BSCHDRJ students, you must submit a retake application of any core course(s) with a "Fail" grade. Despite the above arrangement, all students must apply to retake any failed General Education (GE) courses as needed. Please refer to your programme requirements (3cru) to determine whether you need to complete these courses.

Additionally, the following programmes require students to obtain a minimum of Grade C. If you obtain a Grade C- or Grade D in any required course(s), the School will arrange the retake for you (no retake application is required in this case, if you obtain a Grade C- or Grade D). See table below.

Students may consider taking equivalent distance-learning (DL) courses to replace failed undergraduate or sub-degree courses, where applicable. The application process is the same as outlined above. Courses offerings in distance-learning mode can be found at: https://admissions.hkmu.edu.hk/dl/courses/. Once you have been approved to take the equivalent DL course(s), you will be notified of the registration process and any applicable tuition fee incurred via email. Failure to complete the registration procedure by the deadline will result in cancellation of your application.

Non-local students must hold a valid student visa / entry permit to take courses at the University. For details on renewing or extending your student visa, please refer to the website for Visa Matters for Continuing Students. If you have any questions, please contact the Admissions Team (Undergraduate) at 3120 2589 or via email at regadmug@hkmu.edu.hk.

Any tuition fees incurred from retaking courses will be billed via a debit note after the add/drop period. You must settle the balance before the stipulated deadline to avoid de-registration from the University.

Please also be reminded that, according to the prevailing tuition fee policy, students will be charged on a per-credit basis for any retake of “workplace education or courses involving external party”, as well as courses enrolled/taken beyond the normative study period of their programme, irrespective of the total credits completed during the normative study period.

Further details of tuition fee arrangements can be found on the tuition fees webpage (For students whose courses are under the 3-credit-unit system) or (For students whose courses are under the 5-credit system).
