舊生坐談會:求職面試及轉職的竅門

每年的「啟航:電腦及工程科就業研討會」,都會邀請畢業生回來比Talk,2016年度的啟航也不例外,不過,形式更換為坐談會,由Oliver主持,結果觀眾非常投入,很多爆笑位。

第二部分,畢業生Jacky及阿斌與Dr. Oliver Au談到求職及面試的竅門。

求職

Jacky回憶他用了一個月,寄了十多份求職申請,見了兩間公司,就找到合適工作。Oliver贊同Jacky說,每份求職信都應該因應Job Duties,度身訂做信中內容。Jacky也建議信中多寫achievements,而不只是job duties。

面試

Jacky表示,他為了面試成功,足足準備了兩個星期,預計各種問題,想好回答方法。例如這份BA的工作,他的預備答案,達五千多字,差不多半份畢業論文。

Oliver補充說面試其實是雙方向的,同學也要趁機了解那間公司的情況,特別是文化及做事方式。同學應當每次面試為練習機會,練習多幾次,就可以改進。

對於技術性工作,通常都有測驗。阿斌提醒,就算你忘記了編程語言的syntax或寫法,你可以寫pseudo-code應付。公司要的是解難能力,編程語言的熟練是比較次要。

加薪及轉職

Jacky及阿斌都同意,轉職會加快薪金增長。Jacky說每次轉職都有30%增加,而阿斌說轉兩三次後人工差不多會有一倍升幅。Jacky說他的同屆畢業同學裡,有些轉得快的,現在月薪三四萬的大有人在。

不過,他警告說,僱主不喜歡轉工轉得多,「CV花哂」的求職者。大公司通常會在首年提供訓練,若員工一年後便離開,訓練上用的投資便對公司沒幫助。Jacky建議,第三份工後,應避免快轉工。他上一份工是在國泰,做了四年後,感覺沒有新東西學,才找新工作。

Hugo Leung

Hugo Leung Wai-yin, who graduated from his four-year programme in 2015, won the Best Paper Award for his ‘intelligent pill-dispenser’ design at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering’s International Conference on Consumer Electronics – China 2015.

The pill-dispenser alerts patients via sound and LED flashes to pre-set dosage and time intervals. Unlike units currently on the market, Hugo’s design connects to any mobile phone globally. In explaining how it works, he said: ‘There are three layers in the portable pillbox. The lowest level is a controller with various devices which can be connected to mobile phones in remote locations. Patients are alerted by a sound alarm and flashes. Should they fail to follow their prescribed regime, data can be sent via SMS to relatives and friends for follow up.’ The pill-dispenser has four medicine slots, plus a back-up with a LED alert, topped by a 500ml water bottle. It took Hugo three months of research and coding to complete his design, but he feels it was worth all his time and effort.

Hugo’s public examination results were disappointing and he was at a loss about his future before enrolling at the OUHK, which he now realizes was a major turning point in his life. He is grateful for the OUHK’s learning environment, its industry links and the positive guidance and encouragement from his teachers. The University is now exploring the commercial potential of his design with a pharmaceutical company. He hopes that this will benefit the elderly and chronically ill, as well as the society at large.

Soon after completing his studies, Hugo joined an automation technology company as an assistant engineer. He is responsible for the design and development of automation devices. The target is to minimize human labor and increase the quality of products. He is developing products which are used in various sections, including healthcare, manufacturing and consumer electronics.
