舊生坐談會:技術抑或半技術的事業發展方向

「技術」及「半技術」?

所謂「技術」的IT職位,通常是指程式設計,系統維護,軟件開發,數據庫管理等工作。

而「半技術」的IT職位,是指項目管理,需要分析,數據分析,客戶關係,銷售,業務管理等。特色是很少要編寫程式。

每年的「啟航:電腦及工程科就業研討會」,都會邀請畢業生回來比Talk,2016年度的啟航也不例外,不過,形式更換為坐談會,由Oliver主持,結果觀眾非常投入,很多爆笑位。

是次主題是「技術抑或半技術的事業發展方向」。

  • 「技術」方的代表是阿斌,畢業只兩年多,現職教育軟件公司EClass的程式設計師。
  • 「半技術」方的代表是Jacky,已畢業超過五年,現職Fuji Xerox的商務分析師(Business Analyst或BA)。
「半技術」的商務分析師

Jacky談到Business Analyst的工作,主要是了解客戶的需要,他會花很多時間,在客戶的地方,去幫助客戶分析業務上的需要,及使用數據挖掘等去幫助客戶作出適合的決定。Jacky的團隊有四位BA,每人負責兩三個Projects,他自己有銀行,政府部門,私人機構等。他自嘲是個「吹水唔抹咀」的人,鍾意溝通,也能夠表達清晰。做BA最重要是人際關係處理能力,語言能力,及能給別人信心,基本電腦學問也要通達。

通常商務分析師入職要求是三年經驗,應該如何入行?Jacky提議由Project Coordinator開始,或者先加入一間大公司,再內部調職。 Jacky覺得一些認證例如PMP,Six-Sigma,會幫助他工作更順利,當然也為了加薪轉工。

對於未來,Jacky說他比較喜歡做管理的角色,接觸客戶。不是每人都願意管理一隊團隊,管理是很不容易的工作,不過也有挑戰性,如果同學將來有機會,應該要試一試。

Jacky用其他職位去解釋商務分析師的工作:

  • Project Manager:統籌整個項目及管理時間。
  • System Analyst:負責技術上的設計及落實。
  • Business Analyst:去收集User Requirements,撰寫文件。
「技術」的程式設計師

阿斌喜歡編寫程式,是都大電腦的代表隊成員,在校際比賽獲得佳績。他的職責主要是開發電子學習系統,及教育管理系統,他對公司的一些未來的項目,期待有份參與。

雖然作為程式設計員,阿斌覺得人際關係及溝通都十分重要。工作上是需要常找上司(通常是Analyst)或同事討論,及提出技術疑難,他認為每次約見前,一定要準備所有相關的背景資料,同事幫助你之前,是需要知道那些資料。若沒有準備,上司或同事難免會不滿。

當被問到事業的抱負時,阿斌鍾意編程,希望將來會升至更高級的程式設計員,跟著統籌項目,及晉身管理層。

學以致用

Jacky他雖然「畢業之後已沒有寫程式」,大學學到的概念及理論會在工作上有用。他笑言有次要打電話給Kevin Sir要番份notes,並勸同學就算無心機上堂,都不要扔掉notes。

阿斌讀MU時的學習主要靠是自己練習,及給同學講解,因為能夠講解清晰,是需要自己首先掌握細節,考出來的成績也會更佳。阿斌認為,Software Engineering及Project Management是最有用的科目。阿斌也建議上堂如果專心,其實不太需要溫習。

Hugo Leung
Software and Hardware Engineer

Hugo Leung Wai-yin, who graduated from his four-year programme in 2015, won the Best Paper Award for his ‘intelligent pill-dispenser’ design at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering’s International Conference on Consumer Electronics – China 2015.

The pill-dispenser alerts patients via sound and LED flashes to pre-set dosage and time intervals. Unlike units currently on the market, Hugo’s design connects to any mobile phone globally. In explaining how it works, he said: ‘There are three layers in the portable pillbox. The lowest level is a controller with various devices which can be connected to mobile phones in remote locations. Patients are alerted by a sound alarm and flashes. Should they fail to follow their prescribed regime, data can be sent via SMS to relatives and friends for follow up.’ The pill-dispenser has four medicine slots, plus a back-up with a LED alert, topped by a 500ml water bottle. It took Hugo three months of research and coding to complete his design, but he feels it was worth all his time and effort.

Hugo’s public examination results were disappointing and he was at a loss about his future before enrolling at the OUHK, which he now realizes was a major turning point in his life. He is grateful for the OUHK’s learning environment, its industry links and the positive guidance and encouragement from his teachers. The University is now exploring the commercial potential of his design with a pharmaceutical company. He hopes that this will benefit the elderly and chronically ill, as well as the society at large.

Soon after completing his studies, Hugo joined an automation technology company as an assistant engineer. He is responsible for the design and development of automation devices. The target is to minimize human labor and increase the quality of products. He is developing products which are used in various sections, including healthcare, manufacturing and consumer electronics.
