意外的電腦學研究之路:梁文輝

電腦學是特別講興趣的,要讀到博士班的,很多都是「細細個」就喜歡電腦。不過都大電腦畢業生梁文輝卻是例外。

梁文輝(Henry)在完成都大電腦的學士學位及哲學碩士學位後,於城大電腦系取得博士學位。

聯招放榜時,電腦並非梁文輝的首選科目。起初他一直懷疑,電腦課程是否適合,最後他也慶幸可以進入都會大學電腦系。

他很快發現,大學學習提供了自由空間,不像中學時代只顧死讀書。這裡教師的教學熱情影響了他,並幫助他克服了最初對電腦編程的抗拒恐懼。從零編程知識開始,他逐漸學會如何編寫程序。

他很享受在都大電腦的幾年學習生活。同學關係很融洽,他也有一群親密的朋友。在他的學習中,教授都平易近人,非常願意討論和解釋,讓他解決了不少學習問題。

他覺得課程的內容實用,能夠為他的博士研究打下堅實的基礎。編寫程序的技術特別能幫助他的研究工作,讓他測試算法時得心應手。

小編有興趣知道他什麼時候培養對研究學位的興趣。他說起初沒有任何想法,直到畢業年,他選擇了一個研究的畢業作品課題, 逐漸喜歡上鑽研學問,發現研究似乎適合他,因此走上了研究生的道路。雖然以前的同學已經獲得晉升和更高的薪水,這幾年他們在行內幹得很出色,到目前為止,他沒有後悔,

對於是否追求研究的道路,他對年輕師弟妹的建議是:盡早了解自己的興趣。研究生是需要辛勤的工作,興趣是首要的。

梁文輝是都大電腦系2014年榮譽學士學位及2016年哲學碩士畢業生,及後於城市大學電腦科學系取得博士(2019年)學位。

Hugo Leung Wai-yin, who graduated from his four-year programme in 2015, won the Best Paper Award for his ‘intelligent pill-dispenser’ design at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering’s International Conference on Consumer Electronics – China 2015.

The pill-dispenser alerts patients via sound and LED flashes to pre-set dosage and time intervals. Unlike units currently on the market, Hugo’s design connects to any mobile phone globally. In explaining how it works, he said: ‘There are three layers in the portable pillbox. The lowest level is a controller with various devices which can be connected to mobile phones in remote locations. Patients are alerted by a sound alarm and flashes. Should they fail to follow their prescribed regime, data can be sent via SMS to relatives and friends for follow up.’ The pill-dispenser has four medicine slots, plus a back-up with a LED alert, topped by a 500ml water bottle. It took Hugo three months of research and coding to complete his design, but he feels it was worth all his time and effort.

Hugo’s public examination results were disappointing and he was at a loss about his future before enrolling at the OUHK, which he now realizes was a major turning point in his life. He is grateful for the OUHK’s learning environment, its industry links and the positive guidance and encouragement from his teachers. The University is now exploring the commercial potential of his design with a pharmaceutical company. He hopes that this will benefit the elderly and chronically ill, as well as the society at large.

Soon after completing his studies, Hugo joined an automation technology company as an assistant engineer. He is responsible for the design and development of automation devices. The target is to minimize human labor and increase the quality of products. He is developing products which are used in various sections, including healthcare, manufacturing and consumer electronics.
