Biography

Dr Julie Liao is currently an Associate Professor at the Department of Social Sciences, School of Arts and Social Sciences, Hong Kong Metropolitan University. She obtained B.Med from Peking University and M.Phil and Ph.D in behavioural sciences and health from University of Hong Kong. After graduation, she received the HKU/China Medical Board Grant and the Glasgow/HKU Early Career Mobility Fund to visit Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Glasgow, respectively, for undertaking further training in risk communication and behavioural sciences.
 
Dr Liao's research centers on the psychology of risk, examining how individuals perceive and respond to risk, make decisions about risk reduction and mitigation, and engage with risk communication. She applies risk and behavioural science theories to contemporary global health challenges, including infectious disease outbreaks, vaccine hesitancy, climate change and antimicrobial resistance. Her work has received funding support of over 7 million as PI from Health and Medical Research Fund and Research Grant Council. She has published over 80 peer-reviewed articles and her research work has received over 3,000 citations (Scopus, April 2026). She provides editorial services for Patient Education and Counseling and Stress and Health.
