The University encourages research and development (R&D) activities. Staff may seek funding for their R&D projects from the Katie Shu Sui Pui Charitable Trust — Research and Publication Fund (Applied Research), the University's R&D fund to be approved by the President's Advisory Committee on Research and Development (PACRD) or individual academic units.

Part of the Research Matching Grant obtained by the University has been put in a central pot for research expenses. Key staff in the research institutes/centres of the University may apply for the research matching grant in the University's central pot to help sustain/develop the institutes/centres.
