11-13 December 2024

International Conference on Gerontechnology 2024

The International Conference on Gerontechnology 2024, organised by the School of Nursing and Health Sciences at Hong Kong Metropolitan University, has successfully concluded with over 350 academics and experts from different countries and regions, including Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, Mainland China and Hong Kong. The Conference took place on 11-13 December 2024 at the HKMU campus, with the theme “Collaborating for the Future of Gerontechnology”. Scholars from various fields shared different perspectives on gerontechnology, emphasising its importance in an increasingly aging population and presenting researches that contribute to the development of this field, greatly benefiting the participants.
 
The first Gerontech Competition was a great success and over 20 elderly homes participated, and finally the champion goes to Hong Kong Lutheran Social Service, LC-HKS Mrs Leung Kwai Yee Lutheran Home for the Elderly. They effectively utilised gerontechnology in their daily operations, enhancing work efficiency and increasing interaction with the older people, significantly alleviating their apprehension towards new technology, supporting nursing staff in providing holistic care to older adults in residential care homes. The first runner-up and second runner-up went to Comfort Home for the Elderly and Hong Kong Christian Service Chin Wah Day Care Centre for the Elderly respectively.
The Conference also featured oral presentations and a poster presentation, where participants shared their research on gerontechnology.

“Joyful Companion” Wellness Carnival

Hong Kong Metropolitan University collaborated with the Auxiliary Medical Service, the Baptist Oi Kwan Social Service, the Hong Kong Lutheran Social Service, the SideBySide, and the Mental Health Association of Hong Kong to form the “City Companion” Community Alliance in April 2024. Through training sessions and workshops, the alliance supports mental health services and promotes community awareness of mental health issues.
 
The alliance organised the “Joyful Companion” Wellness Carnival in November to promote mental wellness to the public. In addition to providing information on mental health, the carnival featured various booth games, health talks and music performances. HKMU School of Nursing and Health Sciences also offered free physiotherapy consultations and basic health screening services.

HKMU Flu Vaccination Days 2024

In order to protect the health of students and teachers, for three days starting from 13 November 2024, HKMU has launched “HKMU Vaccination Days” for the second time to help reduce the risk of the spread of germs and maintain a safe and healthy campus environment. The influenza vaccination is administered by professionally trained students from the School of Nursing and Health Sciences, allowing them to apply their knowledge to serve the HKMU community.

HKMU InfoDay 2024

HKMU InfoDay 2024 was held on 9 November 2024 (Saturday). The School welcomed students interested in nursing and physiotherapy programmes to gain in-depth knowledge about the course content. In addition to admission talks, this year we introduced “Taster Hunt”. Participants engaged in various taster activities and demonstrations at different education units related to nursing and physiotherapy, gaining information while winning souvenirs.
 
The purpose of this Info Day is to provide a chance for students and parents to obtain the latest programme information in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere, and interacting with faculty and students to learn about the learning pathways and career prospects in nursing and physiotherapy.

MOU Signing Ceremony with Fukuoka Jo Gakuin Nursing University

To enhance academic exchanges with overseas universities, the School of Nursing and Health Sciences of HKMU and Fukuoka Jo Gakuin Nursing University held a virtual signing ceremony for a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 17 September 2024 (Tuesday). The signing ceremony was jointly helded at both institutions, led by our Dean, Professor Janet Wong and Professor Yuriko Fujino, Dean of Fukuoka Jo Gakuin Nursing University.
 
The signing of MoU represents the establishment of a stronger partnership between the two universities. In the future, both parties will strengthen cultural and academic exchanges through research collaborations and academic exchange programmes, promoting the development of their respective professional fields and helping to cultivate more well-rounded and outstanding nursing talents.

Nursing and Physiotherapy Freshmen Inauguration and White Coat Ceremony 2024

To welcome and encourage the new cohort of nursing and physiotherapy students, the School of Nursing and Health Sciences held an Inaugural White Coat Ceremony on 27 August 2024. The white coat symbolizes professionalism and commitment. Putting on the white coat signifies that nursing and physiotherapy professionals are dedicated to treating every patient with professional knowledge, compassion, and patience.

Gratitude Fest for Clinical Partners Providing Mental Health Practicum

In the process of nurturing high-quality nursing talent, clinical internships are an indispensable part. To express our gratitude to our clinical partners for supporting the mental health students of the School of Nursing and Health Sciences at HKMU by offering internship positions, our school hosted a Gratitude Fest and luncheon on 14 August 2024. This event welcomed representatives from Hospital Authority Head Office, Psychiatric Departments of each hospital and the Correctional Services Department. Students expressed their heartfelt thanks to their mentors through video presentations and sharing sessions, acknowledging their dedication and valuable time.
We look forward to continuing our partnership with Hospital Authority and Correctional Services Department to nurture more high-calibre nursing professionals in the future.

MoU between HKMU and School of Nursing, Jinan University

On July 8, 2024, led by our Provost, Professor Reggie KWAN, and Dean of N&HS, Professor Janet WONG, a delegation of seven members from HKMU visited the School of Nursing, Jinan University to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

The Vice President, the School Dean, the Secretary, the staff, and the students of Jinan University warmly welcomed us. Subsequent to signing the MoU, both nursing schools will strengthen the collaboration in scientific research and postgraduate training, aiming to enhance the professional nursing standards in the Greater Bay Area.

HKMU 35th Anniversary: Health Expo

The second phase of the HKMU 35th Anniversary Health Expo has engaged over 200 participants for health screenings at Kowloon City Plaza. In addition to free health screenings and personalised health consultations by HKMU’s nursing and physiotherapy lecturers and students, interactive health education talks and fitness demonstrations were also arranged to promote overall wellness in the community.

Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Pok Oi Hospital on 7 June 2024. MoU between HKMU N&HS and Yonsei University Mirae Campus

School of Nursing and Health Studies of Hong Kong Metropolitan University (N&HS, HKMU) and Yonsei University Mirae Campus signed an Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at a virtual signing ceremony on 21 May 2024 (Tuesday).

The MOU was signed by Professor Janet WONG, Dean of N&HS, HKMU, and Professor Joseph CHOI, Department Chair, Department of Physical Therapy, Yonsei University.

Both parties will work together to strengthen academic and cultural exchanges in the future through activities such as seminars, workshops, academic research, student exchange, etc. We look forward to close collaborations in the future to promote the academic and professional development of both parties.

An Award Presentation Ceremony was organized by Human Resources Office of HKMU to recognise staff’s outstanding performance and contribution. A total of 15 staff members from School of Nursing and Health Studies have received different awards, including the President’s Awards for Distinguished Achievement, President’s Awards for Excellence in Inspirational Teaching, Katie Shu Sui Pui Charitable Trust – Outstanding Research Publication Award, and Long Service Award.

Health Expo & Expo Launch Ceremony

The Health Expo organised by the School of Nursing and Health Studies was officially launched, with the first of the Expo series themed “Fall Prevention” held at Kwun Tong Yue Man Square, where HKMU nursing and physiotherapy students provided health screening and community health services for visitors, and guest speakers and professors delivered health talks and physical exercises demonstration. TWGHs “iRun” – Hong Kong Jockey Club Special Marathon 2024

The School of Nursing and Health Studies of HKMU actively collaborates with different organizations to contribute to the society. To encourage persons with special needs to engage in different kinds of sports, our School’s academic staff and students participated in the “TWGHs “iRun” – Hong Kong Jockey Club Special Marathon 2024″ organized by Tung Wah Group of Hospitals as volunteers on 14 January 2024.
