Introduction
 
 
Professor Zhu Hua is Professor of Applied Linguistics and Communication, Birkbeck College, University of London and served Head of Department and Assistant Dean (International) in School of Social Sciences, History and Philosophy, Birkbeck College, University of London between 2014 and 2017. Her main research interests span across multilingual and intercultural communication and child language. She has led a number of research projects and knowledge transfer projects funded by the UK research councils including AHRC, ESRC, the Leverhulme and British Academy.
 
She has carried out extensive research on child language acquisition and disorders. Her study on phonological acquisition of Putonghua-speaking children in normally and atypically developing condition (speech disorders or hearing impairments) is widely cited. The Diagnostic evaluation of articulation and phonology (DEAP, 2002, Psychological Corporation) developed by her and colleagues are a key speech and phonology test in English-speaking countries. After moving to Birkbeck, University of London in 2007, she has expanded her research interests to Applied Linguistics and Sociolinguistics. Among her recent publications are Exploring Intercultural Communication: Language in Action (2014/2019, Routledge), Crossing Boundaries and Weaving Intercultural Work, Life, and Scholarship in Globalizing Universities (2016, Routledge, with Adam Komisarof) and Research Methods in Intercultural Communication (2016, Blackwell). She is book series editor for Routledge Studies in Language and Intercultural Communication and Cambridge Key Topics in Applied Linguistics (with Claire Kramsch). She is Book Reviews and Forum editor of Applied Linguistics (Oxford University Press).
