To Slop or Not to Slop: That Is the AI Question

Mr Ross VERMEER
Senior Instructional Designer

ALTO

As the use of AI spreads throughout our daily lives, a backlash is forming. Many AI users – including coders, writers, artists, educators, and media producers – complain about being flooded with 'slop', i.e. low-quality AI output. AI slop clogs our feeds, and frustrates our attempts to produce content of our own. So is AI slop just harmless amusement – or is it the end of human thinking? Views differ, to say the least. In this seminar we'll learn to identify AI slop, consider its effects on our students (and ourselves), and learn some methods of avoiding and overcoming it, especially in the context of higher education.

Assessing students' AI competency using the UNESCO AI Competency Framework

Mrs Caroline LEUNG
Senior Instructional Designer

Ms Crystal CHENG
Assistant Instructional Designer

ALTO

AI competency is now an essential skill for our graduates, and it goes far beyond simply knowing how to use AI tools. How can we measure and assess the progression of a student's AI competency? Drawing upon the UNESCO AI Competency Framework, this workshop will guide you through the process of designing and adapting assessment tasks and rubric criteria to evaluate students' AI competency in the context of your subject area. You will reflect on ways of assessing students' ability to use AI responsibly and ethically, maintain a human-centred mindset, and master AI applications and system design.

Think Deeper, Write Better, Teach Better: Using AI in Reflective Journaling to Enhance Your Teaching

Mr Francis TSOI
Senior Instructional Designer

Mr HO Lap Sang
Instructional Designer

ALTO

Reflective journaling turns everyday teaching experiences into insights that improve student learning and support professional growth, and it is increasingly used in professional development, evaluation, and SoTL. Yet many educators are unsure what makes a reflective journal effective, insightful, and useful.

This introductory workshop has two parts. In the first, the presenter will introduce key elements and principles of reflective journaling, and participants will then practise structuring meaningful reflections on their own teaching. In the second, participants will experiment with AI tools and prompts to analyze their reflections, generate pedagogical ideas, and plan concrete changes to their teaching practice.
