NURS 1310NED Life Sciences is one of the core courses of the BNSGHC and the BNSMHC programmes.

Enrolment Requirement(s)

Only students in the Bachelor of Nursing Studies (General Health Care) (BNSGHC) and the Bachelor of Nursing Studies (Mental Health Care) (BNSMHC) programmes may enrol in NURS 1310NED.

BNSGHC students are required to take this course with NURS 1401NED, and BNSMHC students to take this course with NURS 1403NED.

Aims

This course aims to introduce students to the basic anatomy and key physiological processes of the human body, which serve as a foundation for learning nursing therapeutics and pathophysiology within the Bachelor of Nursing Studies curriculum.

Contents

This course consists of 10 units, covering:

Unit 1: Introduction to the human body

Unit 2: The haematological and cardiovascular system

Unit 3: The respiratory system

Unit 4: The urinary system

Unit 5: The digestive system

Unit 6: The nervous system and special senses

Unit 7:  The musculoskeletal system

Unit 8:  The endocrine system

Unit 9: The reproductive system

Unit 10: The lymphatic and immune system

Learning support

There will be 24 hours of face-to-face lectures, 24 hours of face-to-face tutorials, 9 hours of face-to-face laboratory sessions, and 300 self-study hours.  An online platform, the Online Learning Environment (OLE), is available for students to manage their learning materials as well as to interact with teachers and classmates.

To meet the requirements of the Nursing Council of Hong Kong, students must have an attendance rate of 90% or above for this course.

Assessment

There will be two written assignments for continuous assessment and a final examination. Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
