Aims

This course aims to introduce students to the study of the social functions of language in a society. In particular, it provides students with an opportunity to consider how language varies according to different social factors and how different social groups represent and construct their identities through the use of language.

Contents

The course covers the following topics:

  • Social functions of language and speech communities
  • Methods in studying sociolinguistic variation
  • Language variation: focus on users
  • Language variation: focus on uses
  • Language and culture in contemporary societies

Learning Support

Three-hour lectures will be conducted face-to-face.

Assessment

There will be one quiz (30%), one assignment (30%) and a final examination (40%).

Online requirement

Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
