Aims
This is a 5-credit postgraduate-level course. It is a core course of the Master of Arts in Creative Industries and Cultural Assets programme. The course will introduce different theories and concepts for understanding the historical development and the production practices of film and TV industries. Different industrial practices such as the production of feature films, documentaries and television series will be examined. The course will also explore the complex relationships between cultural formation and the historical dynamics of different forms of cultural industries. Cases in both Hong Kong and other countries will be discussed.

Contents
The course covers the following topics:

  • Defining various film and TV industries in Hong Kong, Asia and the global environment
  • The political economy and the Frankfurt School approach to film and TV industries
  • Neo-liberal theories of creative industries and film and TV industries
  • Post-Fordism theories of film and TV industries
  • Local and global historical development of film and TV industries
  • Local, global and 'glocal' tensions in film and TV industries
  • Contribution of Hong Kong film and TV industries to Hong Kong popular culture
  • Case studies of Hong Kong film and TV industries in practice

Assessment
Assessment is based on students' performance in continuous assessment components including (1) a class presentation and written report, (2) a mid-term assignment, and (3) a term paper and oral presentation. These components are worth 30%, 30% and 40% of the total marks for the course respectively. Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
