Dear Colleagues,
Over the past few years, HKMU has significantly expanded its campus space and enhanced its facilities to accommodate its growing student population.
Following is an update on the 2025 student recruitment exercise.
With most, if not all, UGC-funded universities having removed the admission quota for taught postgraduate (TPG) students, this year, we experienced a drop of about 26% in the total number of TPG applications for the Autumn Term Admission.
This year, we decided to admit only first-tier (一本線) NCEE (gaokao) students from mainland China. In the end, we admitted 3.5 times more first-tier gaokao students this year than last year. However, we are still facing a shortfall in the total number of gaokao students admitted compared with that of last year.
On a positive note, over the past three years, the number of JUPAS applicants selecting HKMU programmes as their top three choices (Band A) has consistently increased. Band A applications surged by 20.7% compared to those of last year. Following the release of the JUPAS Main Round Offer results on 6 August, 2,665 JUPAS applicants accepted our offers, a significant increase from 2,079 last year.
This year, there was also a significant increase in the number of students applying and admitted to HKMU via the Direct Admission (non-JUPAS) Scheme compared to last year.
Overall, despite the challenging circumstances, the total number of full-time students admitted to HKMU has continued to rise markedly.
Now, the challenge for us is to recruit “good” students, instead of more students.
In addition to being able to complete their programmes successfully, good students are those who:
- Treasure the opportunity to study at HKMU,
- Help build a positive and supportive environment for their peers, and
- Aspire to have a positive impact on the community upon graduation.
In the future, we should consider offering more scholarships and tailored support for these students to encourage others to join HKMU.
