HKMU students shine on the big stage

Dear Colleagues,

Shortly after I joined Hong Kong Metropolitan University (then OUHK) in 2021, I received the news that our students in the Lee Shau Kee School of Business and Administration (B&A) had won the Championship in The 2021 HSBC/HKU Business Case Competition, which was contested by at least nine Hong Kong universities every year.

I was pleasantly surprised that our students did so well, but some commented that our students had just been lucky. Quietly, our B&A students continued to shine and clinched the second runner-up position in the same competition in 2022 and 2023. Our students also won top prizes in The Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival and Awards, national poetry and writing contests, Information Technology Tournaments and so on.

In 2022, HKMU became a full member of The University Sports Federation of Hong Kong (USFHK) after a long and tortuous admission process. Although HKMU is not known for its training facilities and sporting venues, our student athletes thrived in many events, winning gold in the men's 100 m and first place in two categories of the Taekwondo Competition, to name just a few, in this year's USFHK Competitions.

In the time that I have been with HKMU, I could not help but amazed by the outstanding performance of our students in local, national and international competitions. Apart from the intrinsic benefits of sports and other student activities, these open competitions provide valuable opportunities for our students to interact with their peers, learn from each other, and work as a team. Importantly, these events help students build their confidence, especially when they perform well and/or win!

None of these successes would have been possible without the valued support of our faculty and staff, who assisted our students academically, mentally, physically and even financially! They are all members of the winning teams and should be congratulated, and in due course, recognized.

While we push the boundaries, we must learn to live within our constraints.

It is safe to look at the stars when we have both feet on the ground.
