Identifying Inadequacies for Institutional Progress

Dear Colleagues,

HKMU marked the first day of 2026 with a flag-raising ceremony. This year, however, the event was especially significant: for the first time, the ceremony was conducted by the newly formed HKMU Student Flag-guard Team. This pioneering group of 14 full-time undergraduate students, recruited just a few months ago, underwent rigorous training in November and was officially inaugurated on 30 December 2025.

Originally, the team was set to make its debut at the open plaza outside the JCC. However, during preparatory exercises, several site-related challenges were identified. For example, the current flagpole area requires a complete redesign and expansion to ensure an appropriate environment for the Flag-guard Team's activities. Additionally, the internal flagpole ropes need to be replaced with external ones. The Facilities Management Office has begun exploring solutions to these issues.

Meanwhile, HKMU has been making strides in enhancing its campus facilities. The recent development of state-of-the-art teaching and learning spaces at MU Tower has prompted a thorough assessment of the “well-used” lecture and tutorial rooms on the 4th to 9th floors of Block C at the main campus. Upgrades to these facilities are scheduled to begin shortly, with completion targeted before the 2026/2027 academic year commences.

Furthermore, we have successfully completed another campus improvement initiative. The MU Club, situated in Tai Ning Hall on the 12th floor of the Cheng Yu Tung Building (Block A) at the Main Campus, provides a new and enhanced dining experience for HKMU faculty and staff. This venue also serves as a high-quality in-house catering option for event organisers, supporting meetings, conferences and community-engagement activities. Building on its origins as a modest “VIP” room within the former Jockey Club Campus (JCC) canteen, the MU Club will continue to evolve and improve its services to better meet the needs of the university community.

These cases serve to remind us how striving for improvement often reveals areas needing attention. Through ongoing cycles of self-reflection and assessment, corrective action and meaningful enhancement, the University continues to strengthen itself and prepare for future challenges—a philosophy embodied in our motto: “Transcendence through Erudition and Renewal.”
