Modest Museum with an Inspiring Impact

Dear Colleagues,

On 12 February 2025, HKMU received a remarkable donation of manuscripts and relics from Eileen Chang, Stephen Soong and Mae Fong Soong. This generous gift was made possible by Dr Roland Soong and Mrs Elaine Soong Kingman, who serve as administrators of Eileen Chang's estate.

During the donation ceremony, we announced that this invaluable collection would be permanently housed at HKMU, enriching the cultural heritage available to both the literary community and researchers. This initiative highlights HKMU's dedication to advancing modern Chinese literary research and fostering innovation in the digital humanities, a strategic research focus of the School of Arts and Social Sciences (A&SS).

Since the donation, HKMU colleagues, especially those from the University Library, the A&SS and the Facilities Management Office, have worked diligently to establish a dedicated repository for this inaugural collection, which includes Eileen Chang's manuscripts, relics and correspondence with close friends, including Stephen Soong and Mae Fong Soong.

The team curating the inaugural exhibition chose to name this new repository the “HKMU Museum of Modern Chinese Literature”, which occupies about 2,000 sq. ft on the second floor of the Stanley Ho Library.

Initially, I had some hesitation about using the term “museum”, recognising the unique responsibilities it entails—such as an ongoing commitment to expand and enrich the collection of modern Chinese literature, organise regular exhibitions and promotional events, and support the scholarly activities of local and overseas researchers. These responsibilities would require the dedicated efforts and long-term commitment of the University's faculty and staff.

Ultimately, inspired by the enthusiasm and dedication of the HKMU team, the decision was made, and the HKMU Museum of Modern Chinese Literature is now officially open.

This marks the beginning of a new chapter in HKMU's history.

In recent days, our city has witnessed a devastating tragedy, which has brought deep pain and sadness to Hong Kong. During such difficult times, it is more important than ever for our community to come together. Let us join in mourning the victims, extend our heartfelt condolences to those affected, and reaffirm our collective commitment to supporting one another. May compassion and unity guide us forward together.
