Inaugural World University Animation Awards

HKMU proudly launched the inaugural World University Animation Awards (WUAA), inviting university students worldwide to submit their works that demonstrate artistic vision, technical excellence and originality in the first quarter of this year. The adjudicators for the awards include esteemed figures from both the international and Hong Kong animation communities, such as Mr Koji Morimoto, renowned animator of the classic Japanese anime film Akira, alongside other distinguished animation professionals, visual artists, art tech experts and scholars. By the submission deadline on 10 June, the University had received an impressive 1,763 entries from 96 countries or regions, reflecting enthusiastic global participation.

The WUAA also serves as an international platform for animation talent exchange. A two-day event will be held on 15 and 16 September at The Box in Freespace, located in the West Kowloon Cultural District, as well as on the HKMU campus. During the event, adjudicators, finalists, along with animation industry experts and luminaries from around the world, will engage in exchanges with students and faculty from HKMU and other institutions. All shortlisted animations will be screened during the event. The awards are organised by a committee led by Prof. Eva Man Kit-wah, Chair Professor in Humanities of the School of Arts and Social Sciences, and the awards presentation ceremony will take place on the evening of 16 September.

At the Asia-Pacific Association for International Education (APAIE) 2025 Conference and Exhibition held in Delhi, India on 24–28 March, HKMU introduced its latest developments to representatives from institutions and participants across the Asia-Pacific region, and explored opportunities for collaboration in areas such as partnerships with universities of applied sciences, student exchange programmes and summer courses. During the event, Secretary for Education Dr Choi Yuk-lin also visited the HKMU booth. The University has been committed to promoting internationalisation in recent years. With next year's APAIE set to take place in Hong Kong, the University looks forward to participating again and showcasing its growth and unique strengths to the wider world.

Main campus landmarks showcasing a new vision

As major enhancement works on the Main Campus progress in full swing, the newly erected entrance portal made its debut earlier this year. This striking landmark, facing Good Shepherd Street, not only marks the campus entrance but also symbolises the University’s warm welcome to all users and visitors. Inspired by the twisted form of a Mobius strip, the design reflects HKMU’s commitment to unlocking students’ boundless potential and imagination through education.

In addition, the communal area on the third floor of the Jockey Club Campus has been refurbished. With glass walls now enclosing the original openings on both sides, and with air conditioning, comfortable seats and greenery, the space has become a place where staff and students can relax in comfort.
