Step by step: Cultivating future scientific researchers

To spark students' interest in scientific research and enhance their research capabilities, the School of Science and Technology launched the Next Generation Scientist Incubation Programme last academic year. The programme, structured into four phases, offers research training, exchange trips and symposiums to progressively build students' knowledge and skills. The first cohort has successfully completed the programme. Let's revisit their journey and experiences.

Understanding the research process

Students familiarised themselves with the research process, such as formulating research hypotheses, collecting data and applying analytical methods. Following interviews and practical evaluations, 14 students were selected to advance to the next phase.

Conducting immersive research training

Selected students were each attached to a supervisor for a year-long immersive research training, during which they initiated their own research projects, gaining hands-on experience in the research process. This included designing and conducting experiments independently, which significantly deepened their research knowledge and technical skills.

Broadening the research horizons

In addition to intensive research training, students participated in an exchange trip to Shanghai and Hangzhou to broaden their perspectives. They visited Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai Ocean University and Hangzhou Dianzi University to engage in meaningful exchanges with local peers and gain insights into the latest developments in innovation and technology.

Presenting research findings

Students hosted a research symposium to present their findings, where outstanding students were recognised with awards, including the “Best Poster Award”, “Best Presentation Award” and “Outstanding Performance Award”. Scholarships were also granted to reward their achievements.

Research project: “Potential Inhibition of Harmful Algal Blooms (HAB) by Mangrove Leaf Extracts”

“This programme kindled my passion for research. Initially, I only had a superficial understanding of laboratory research, but through the programme, I was able to complete a project independently. This experience brought me a strong sense of accomplishment. In the future, I hope to continue exploring different areas of research and expanding my knowledge.”
