HKMU signs MOU with CMA Industrial Development Foundation Limited to foster the sustainable development of the testing and certification industry

Date: 29 June 2022

The School of Science and Technology of Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with CMA Industrial Development Foundation Limited (CMA Testing) earlier to foster exchange and collaboration between the two parties and nurture talent for the Testing and Certification (T&C) industry in Hong Kong.

The MOU was signed by Dr Tony Lee Chi-chung, Acting Head of Construction and Quality Management cum Assistant Professor of the School, and Prof. Raymond Wong Wai-yin, Head of Collaboration of CMA Testing, and was witnessed by the Dean of the School, Prof. Philips Wang Fu-lee, and the Chief Operations Officer of CMA Testing, Mr Dominic Lam Chun-hong.

Speaking at the ceremony, Prof. Wang said, “HKMU is committed to contributing to Hong Kong's T&C industry by offering three bachelor's degree programmes, which are designed with different depth and width. We have an applied degree programme stressing integration and practicality and another programme focusing on food testing science, providing various study paths to students with different interests and abilities. To further nurture professionals for the industry, the University will also launch a master's and a bachelor's programme in Medical Laboratory Science this year and next year, respectively.” He said he hopes the collaboration will strengthen the exchange between HKMU and CMA Testing in different areas, and continue to optimize testing, inspection and certification work in Hong Kong and the rest of the Greater Bay Area.

Mr Lam mentioned in his remarks that HKMU and CMA Testing shared the same vision in promoting scientific research and development. “This strategic partnership allows us to coordinate with each other utilizing our individual strengths and to train more professionals for the T&C industry,” he said. “CMA Testing has been providing career and internship opportunities for post-secondary graduates and students. It also arranges a variety of activities to share practical working experience with students and provide them with training to meet the needs of the industry.”

HKMU partnered with CMA Testing for some short-term testing projects a few years ago. The signing of the MOU marks a closer relationship between the two parties to allow more innovative collaboration and exchanges to promote the sustainable development of the T&C industry in Hong Kong.

Prof. Philips Wang hopes the collaboration will strengthen the exchange between HKMU and CMA Testing in varying degrees, and continue to optimize the testing, inspection and certification work in Hong Kong as well as the Greater Bay Area.
In his remarks, Mr Dominic Lam says the strategic partnership allows CMA Testing and HKMU to coordinate with each other by utilizing the strengths of both parties, and to train more elites for the Testing and Certification industry.

After graduating from OUHK, Krutz obtained an M.Sc. in Engineering Management from CityU. He is now completing his second master degree, M.Sc. in Biomedical Engineering, at CUHK. Krutz has a wide range of working experience. He has been with Siemens, VTech, and PCCW.

Hugo Leung
Software and Hardware Engineer
Innovation Team Company Limited

Hugo Leung Wai-yin, who graduated from his four-year programme in 2015, won the Best Paper Award for his ‘intelligent pill-dispenser’ design at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering’s International Conference on Consumer Electronics – China 2015.

The pill-dispenser alerts patients via sound and LED flashes to pre-set dosage and time intervals. Unlike units currently on the market, Hugo’s design connects to any mobile phone globally. In explaining how it works, he said: ‘There are three layers in the portable pillbox. The lowest level is a controller with various devices which can be connected to mobile phones in remote locations. Patients are alerted by a sound alarm and flashes. Should they fail to follow their prescribed regime, data can be sent via SMS to relatives and friends for follow up.’ The pill-dispenser has four medicine slots, plus a back-up with a LED alert, topped by a 500ml water bottle. It took Hugo three months of research and coding to complete his design, but he feels it was worth all his time and effort.

Hugo’s public examination results were disappointing and he was at a loss about his future before enrolling at the OUHK, which he now realizes was a major turning point in his life. He is grateful for the OUHK’s learning environment, its industry links and the positive guidance and encouragement from his teachers. The University is now exploring the commercial potential of his design with a pharmaceutical company. He hopes that this will benefit the elderly and chronically ill, as well as the society at large.

Soon after completing his studies, Hugo joined an automation technology company as an assistant engineer. He is responsible for the design and development of automation devices. The target is to minimize human labor and increase the quality of products. He is developing products which are used in various sections, including healthcare, manufacturing and consumer electronics.
