Title

Shearography, Its Role in Making Our Air Journeys Safer and Nondestructive Testing of Buildings and Structures

Abstract

This presentation will introduce shearography, a laser-based full-field strain measurement technique for non-destructive inspection of aircraft structures, particularly parts made of composite materials. It detects defects in objects by revealing the defect-induced deformation anomalies. Since the FAA mandated that all aircraft tires must be inspected with shearography, aircraft accidents due to tire failures have been virtually eliminated. Shearography may have saved many lives! Other applications of shearography will be briefly reviewed, in particular, non-destructive testing of buildings and structures.

Biographies

Prof. Michael Hung is the inventor of Shearography. He received his Bachelor and PhD degree from HKU and University of Illinois, respectively. He worked in the academic arena for over 40 years and retired as John F Dodge Chair Professor from Oakland University in Michigan, USA. Professor Hung’s research interests span the areas of mechanical, aerospace, manufacturing, materials, electronic, medical, as well as civil engineering. During his tenure (2001-2009) at City University of Hong Kong, he had served in various capacities (Chair Professor of Electronic Engineering, Chair Professor of Building and Construction, Chair Professor and Head of Manufacturing Engineering and Engineering Management.) He also holds honorary professorship of 4 universities in China. He was keynote speaker at several national and international conferences, and had received numerous academic honors and professional awards.
