HKMU Bachelor of Applied Science in Gemmology and Jewellery Studies Launch First Laboratory Session for Students

The Bachelor of Applied Science in Gemmology and Jewellery Studies at Hong Kong Metropolitan University has officially commenced. This program aims to cultivate more professionals in gem and jewellery testing and certification for Hong Kong, while also providing students with a rich learning experience. During the laboratory session, students have developed essential analytical skills by operating advanced instruments, including Laser Raman spectrometers for gemstones, Fluorescence Spectrometers, Synthetic Diamond Scanner, UV-Visible spectrometer, and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrometer. Through these hands-on experiences, students not only learn the fundamentals of gem identification and analysis but also master key skills such as instrument operation, data interpretation, and problem-solving. These include understanding the physical and optical properties of gemstones, the identification characteristics of common gemstone types, and the principles behind various gemstone treatments. Students have been highly engaged in the laboratory sessions, demonstrating a deep understanding and strong interest in the basic principles.
