Champion and 2nd Runner Up in IEEE (HK) Computational Intelligence Chapter 17th FYP Competition

The annual FYP competition is one of the most prestigeous of its kind, and in the 17th year recent graduates from the Computing programme did outstandingly, with LIU On Chun Arthur 廖安駿 and LI Shun Ki 李順麒won the championship with their project titled “Visually Impaired Assistant Using Neural Network and Image Recognition” which was supervised by Prof Vanessa Ng. In addition, KWOK Chun Wai Jason 郭峻瑋 was awarded the second runner-up with his project titled “AI-Powered Question Generator”, which was supervised by Dr Keith Lee. They presented their work in the online finalist presentation on 5-Dec-2020.

電機電子工程師學會(香港分會)智能運算屬會所舉辦的畢業作品競賽,今年是第十七屆的比賽,是同類中最具資歷的其一。幾位來自電腦課程的畢業生,獲得優秀成績。廖安駿和李順麒的作品「基於機器學習及影像識別的視障輔助流動系統」奪冠(指導為Prof Vanessa Ng)。同時,郭峻瑋的作品「人工智能推動的問題產生系統」也奪得季軍(指導為Dr Keith Lee)。他們皆獲邀在十二月五日的總決賽中在網上發表研究成果。

Hugo Leung Wai-yin, who graduated from his four-year programme in 2015, won the Best Paper Award for his ‘intelligent pill-dispenser’ design at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering’s International Conference on Consumer Electronics – China 2015.

The pill-dispenser alerts patients via sound and LED flashes to pre-set dosage and time intervals. Unlike units currently on the market, Hugo’s design connects to any mobile phone globally. In explaining how it works, he said: ‘There are three layers in the portable pillbox. The lowest level is a controller with various devices which can be connected to mobile phones in remote locations. Patients are alerted by a sound alarm and flashes. Should they fail to follow their prescribed regime, data can be sent via SMS to relatives and friends for follow up.’ The pill-dispenser has four medicine slots, plus a back-up with a LED alert, topped by a 500ml water bottle. It took Hugo three months of research and coding to complete his design, but he feels it was worth all his time and effort.

Hugo’s public examination results were disappointing and he was at a loss about his future before enrolling at the OUHK, which he now realizes was a major turning point in his life. He is grateful for the OUHK’s learning environment, its industry links and the positive guidance and encouragement from his teachers. The University is now exploring the commercial potential of his design with a pharmaceutical company. He hopes that this will benefit the elderly and chronically ill, as well as the society at large.

Soon after completing his studies, Hugo joined an automation technology company as an assistant engineer. He is responsible for the design and development of automation devices. The target is to minimize human labor and increase the quality of products. He is developing products which are used in various sections, including healthcare, manufacturing and consumer electronics.
