Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) is proud to announce that a team of its Computer Science students has been awarded 2nd Runner Up in the undergraduate section of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Young Professionals Exhibition & Competition (YPEC). The winning team, consisting of Chui Tsz Ching, Yip On Tik, Lee Chak Yin, and Wu Long Fung Eugene, distinguished themselves as the only finalists from the self-financing tertiary sector. They competed against 17 other teams from six UGC-funded institutions in the final pitching round.

The team presented their project, the “Smart Subtitle Glasses” (SSG)—an augmented reality (AR) wearable device engineered to improve accessibility and communication for individuals with hearing impairments. The SSG system advances beyond conventional assistive technologies by seamlessly integrating real-time speech-to-text transcription and multilingual translation. Its architecture leverages two core modules, both employing state-of-the-art pre-trained models to ensure exceptional performance, accuracy, and minimal latency.

Organized by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), the YPEC provides a global platform for young engineers and students to showcase innovative projects, network with industry leaders, and compete at an international level. This achievement underscores HKMU’s successful endeavours in cultivating practical, entrepreneurial, and impactful skills among its students.
