School of Open Learning About School of Open Learning Message from the Dean

I sincerely welcome you to the School of Open Learning (SOL) at Hong Kong Metropolitan University. The SOL was established on 1 September 2021 — the same day that the Open University of Hong Kong was retitled Hong Kong Metropolitan University.

The SOL is the home to all part-time and distance-learning programmes leading to sub-degree, undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications of the University. We take pride in having 35 years of experience in offering quality part-time and flexible study programmes through modern and flexible modes, and our programmes are well recognized as one of the best in Asia. In 2023, I had the honour of receiving two of the highest accolades in the field of open and distance education, the International Council for Open and Distance Education (ICDE) “Prize of Excellence” and the Asian Association for Open and Distance Learning (AAOU) “Meritorious Service Award”, each of which is presented to only one recipient per year.

Besides coordinating the large number of study programmes across a broad range of disciplines, the SOL runs the Institute for Research in Open and Innovative Education (IROPINE), which reflects the institution's high level of scholarship and serious commitment to teaching quality. The IROPINE conducts research projects to solidly guide our teaching development, and organizes international conferences and various events for academic exchanges to promote advancements in educational delivery.

We aim to further strengthen our learning support for students learning at a distance from the campus and to enhance our student activities for all these students. We strive to make your academic journey more effective and a life-enriching experience.

Knowledge-based economy has become the trend. Hong Kong and major cities of the world are quickly becoming knowledge-based societies. It is essential that members of the community keep enhancing their knowledge so that new challenges are well handled and good opportunities are seized, regardless of age. Our part-time/distance-learning programmes aim to assist you in achieving your goals.
