Establishing a New Student Society

HKMU students who wish to:

  1. establish a new student society registered under HKMU Students’ Union.
  2. apply registration for any past student society without an active cabinet in 2025/26.

Eligibility of an office-bearer:

  1. All the office-bearers should be active students studying one or more credit-bearing courses in HKMU and have relevant expertise / experience / interest in the area/ activities proposed where applicable.
  2. For school-based student societies, the office-bearers should be the students from the specific school; For programme-related-societies, a minimum of 50% of the office-bearers must be students from the related programme. The final decision rests on the agreement between the relevant school / programme and the SAO. 
The following criteria, among others, will be considered for any applications for registration:
 
  1. General benefit to students, the University and the community;
  2. Relevance and reasonableness of a society’ s constitution / memorandum / activities;
  3. The society complies with existing University objectives and regulations;
  4. Membership is not restricted to a designated group/ or groups of students and all active students should be included as potential members;
  5. The interests and objectives are clearly distinct from those of other student societies.

For any application for new student society, the following documents should be submitted to the Committee on Student Affairs (CSA) or Sub-Committee of Student Affairs (Sub-CSA) via Student Affairs Office (SAO) for consideration:

Application deadline for activity funding year 2026/2027: 30 January 2026

Student societies are required to find an advisor to support their organisation. In general, the role and responsibilities of the advisor are as follows:

  1. Advise the society concerning activities and development;
  2. Explain University policy and regulations to students concerned and reflect student opinions to the SAO whenever necessary;
  3. In order to provide effective guidance on society activities and development, the advisor should have a relevant background and be able to provide appropriate resources according to the nature and objectives of the student organisation for their development (for all student societies including non-programme-related societies).

For student societies that have been successfully registered with approval by the CSA or the Sub-CSA on 2025/26, please refer to the Existing Student Societies (for ExCo Members and Advisors).

For students interested in organising student-led activities before registering a student society; or those who have missed the deadline for establishing a new student society, we encourage you to apply for the Student-Initiated Activity Fund. This fund offers up to HKD $5,000 to support projects that enrich campus life.
