Eligibility for Advanced Standing

Taught Postgraduate Students Advanced Standing Eligibility for Advanced Standing

Eligibility

To be eligible for advanced standing/credit transfer at the University, a qualification must be:

  1. at least at Postgraduate Diploma / Postgraduate Certificate level or equivalent, or be a higher degree, at least at Master’s degree level; and
  2. obtained from a recognized institution which is accredited, with high standing in the home country and with an assessment arrangement which is up to internationally acceptable standards; and
  3. achieved by study and examination; qualifications obtained by means of exemption are not eligible for advanced standing/credit transfer.

Professional examinations are not accepted for transfer towards the University’s taught postgraduate level programmes.

Postgraduate Diplomas in Education (PGDEs) or equivalent qualifications, may only be used for transfer towards undergraduate programmes and Postgraduate Diplomas in Education.

Research degrees may only be used for advanced standing applications towards the University’s Postgraduate Diplomas and Master’s degree programmes with the exception of the Postgraduate Diplomas in Education.

Total Credit Value (TCV)

A qualification which is eligible for advanced standing is assigned a Total Credit Value (TCV).

If the TCV of a qualification = 0, the qualification is not eligible for any transfer credits. Applicants should not apply with such qualification(s).

Lists of qualifications which have been assessed by the University are available for reference. If a qualification is not on the lists, the qualification has not yet been assessed and therefore the TCV is not known yet.

Applicants may check the Information on local or overseas qualifications which have been assessed by the University for advanced standing/credit exemption from the following list:

TCV for applications towards Master’s degree and Postgraduate Diploma Programmes

Please note that the qualifications were assessed based on the normal mode of study of the qualification offered by the institutions concerned. The University may review the TCV of qualifications as and when necessary.

Maximum Entitlement

Each applicant is only allowed to accept transfer credits up to his/her maximum entitlement.

The maximum entitlement of an applicant is determined by the TCV of his/her previous qualification(s). If more than one qualification is being held, the maximum entitlement will be determined in accordance with the highest TCV.

An applicant's maximum entitlement in a programme is subject to the maximum advanced standing allowed in a programme.

The maximum advanced standing allowed for Postgraduate Diploma and Master's Degree is 20 and 30 respectively.
