Introduction

The Bachelor of Nursing Studies (Mental Health Care) programme is a conversion programme designed for Enrolled Nurses (Psychiatric) who wish to become Registered Nurses (Psychiatric).

Programme Aims

The Bachelor of Nursing Studies (Mental Health Care) programme aims to elevate the nursing education and clinical experience of Enrolled Nurses (Psychiatric). By integrating professional values, knowledge, evidence-based research and leadership concepts, this programme prepares students to become a Registered Nurse (Psychiatric) in Hong Kong.

Admission Requirements

To comply with the requirements of the Nursing Council of Hong Kong for the training of Registered Nurses (Psychiatric), applicants must fulfil (A), (B), (C), (D), and (E):

Have a minimum of three months' post qualification of Enrolled Nurse (Psychiatric)
(D)
Achieve the minimum entry requirements for training of Registered Nurses (see details below)
I. Applicable to applicants with Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE) results:

    a) The candidates must have a minimum of 5 subjects in the HKCEE, or equivalent.

    b) The compulsory subjects required are:
      i. English Language (Syllabus B) at Grade D or above, or English Language (Syllabus A) at Grade B, or English Language at Level 3;

      ii. Any one science subject from the following at Grade E or above; Biology, Chemistry, Human Biology, Mathematics, Physics;

      iii. Any two other subjects at Grade E (or Level 2 for Chinese Language) or above; Accommodation and Catering Services, Additional Mathematics, Biology, Buddhist Studies, Chemistry, Chinese History, Chinese Language, Chinese Literature, Commerce, Computer and Information Technology, Design and Technology, Design and Technology (Alternative Syllabus), Economics, Economics & Public Affairs, Electronics and Electricity, English Literature, French, Geography, Government and Public Affairs, Graphical Communication, History, Home Economics (Food, Home and Family), Human Biology, Integrated Humanities, Mathematics, Music, Physical Education, Physics, Principles of Accounts, Putonghua, Religious Studies, Science and Technology, Social Studies, Visual Arts, Word Processing and Business Communication (English);

      iv. Any one other subject at Grade E or above.

    c) Any one of the subjects listed in (b)(i) to (b)(iii) must be at Grade C (or Level 3 for English Language or Chinese Language) or above; or
II. Applicable to applicants with Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSE) results:

    a) The candidates must have a minimum of 5 subjects in the HKDSE, or equivalent, or any recognized qualification above.

    b) The 5 compulsory subjects required are:
      i. 4 Core Subjects, with English Language and Chinese Language at Level 3 or above, Mathematics at Level 2 or above, and an attainment at “Attained” in Citizenship and Social Development#; and

      ii. 1 Elective Subject from Category A* – New Senior Secondary Subjects at Level 2 or above

      For Category B – Applied Learning Subjects, students awarded “Attained” results will be considered by the Education Bureau as having acquired the competencies as those at Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Level 2 for the purposes of further studies and work.

      # For candidates who took Liberal Studies in 2023/24 or before, Level 2 or above in Liberal Studies will be regarded as “Attained” in Citizenship and Social Development.

Higher Diploma in Nursing (QF level 4) or hold recognised equivalent qualification.

Programme Structure

The programme consists of 96 credit-units, comprising theoretical courses, clinical practicum, English language courses, and university core courses. It is expected that students will normally complete the programme within four years. The maximum study period is six years. Students are required to complete the credit-units as follows:

  1. 81 credit-units of school core courses from Table 1;
  2. 6 credit-units of English language courses from Table 2;
  3. 9 credit-units of university core courses from Table 3.

Career Prospects & Professional Recognition

Upon completion of this programme, graduates will be awarded the Bachelor of Nursing Studies (Mental Health Care) degree and will fulfill the requirements for registration as Registered Nurses (Psychiatric) with the Nursing Council of Hong Kong (Pending the approval from the Nursing Council of Hong Kong).
