Introduction

The nursing programmes aim to develop competent, ethical, and compassionate professionals equipped to meet the evolving needs of healthcare. Through a strong integration of academic learning and clinical practice, students build core competencies essential for safe, person-centred, and evidence-based nursing care. Emphasising critical thinking, effective communication, and professional integrity, the programmes prepare graduates to contribute meaningfully to individual and community well-being, and to pursue a rewarding nursing career in diverse healthcare settings.

Programme Aims

The Bachelor of Nursing with Honours in General Health Care aims to prepare undergraduate students with the essential professional knowledge, skills and competence to:

  • meet current and emergent needs of individuals, families, the community and the health care delivery system of Hong Kong;
  • apply a holistic approach of health to nursing practice and act as change agents;
  • appraise and apply evidence-based practice in their day-to-day professional activities;
  • be able to think critically and work in teams, be self-directing and culturally sensitive; and
  • become Registered Nurses (General) in Hong Kong.

    A dedicated digital platform offers instant access to clinical resources and learning tools during practicum. It supports real-time decision-making, streamlines assessment, and enhances learning outcomes.

  • Contemporary Curriculum with Elective Opportunity
    The curriculum reflects current healthcare service needs and professional standards. Students also undertake an elective course, offering the opportunity to explore a specific area of interest within the nursing profession.

Admission Requirements

  • JUPAS:
    Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE):
    – Chinese Language: Level 3 or above; and
    – English Language: Level 3 or above; and
    – Mathematics (Compulsory Part): Level 2 or above; and
    – Citizenship and Social Development: Attained; and
    – TWO Elective Subjects: Level 2 or above
    (preferably Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Health Management & Social Care)
  • Direct Admission

    Non-JUPAS candidates (e.g. International Baccalaureate Diploma, GCE A-Level, or Associate Degree and Higher Diploma in Hong Kong) shall satisfy the general entrance requirements of the University and Level 3 in English Language and Chinese Language in HKDSE or equivalent*.

    *The minimum entry requirements for training of Registered Nurses as stipulated by Nursing Council of Hong Kong.

Programme Structure

The five-year full-time programme consists of 153 credit-units, combining theoretical courses, clinical practicum, general education, and university core requirements. Students will build a strong foundation in nursing through studies in core nursing knowledge, specialised care for different populations, research foundations, life sciences, pharmacology, and behavioural sciences. The curriculum is designed to prepare students for professional nursing practice and to support their personal and intellectual development.

Theoretical Courses (104 credit-units)

The academic component of the programme equips students with the knowledge and critical thinking skills needed for safe, effective, and evidence-based nursing care across various healthcare settings.

University Core Courses (9 credit-units)

Courses that reflect the university's core values of Integrity, Fairness, Perseverance, and Innovation, contributing to students' holistic development.

Clinical Practicum (26 credit-units)

Supervised clinical placements are conducted in hospitals and other healthcare settings. Students gain hands-on experience and apply their knowledge in real-life nursing situations under professional guidance.

English Language Courses (6 credit-units)

Courses designed to enhance students' academic reading, writing, speaking, and presentation skills in English, supporting their success in university-level study.

General Education Courses (6 credit-units)

Interdisciplinary courses that broaden students’ intellectual horizons and promote critical thinking, global awareness, and lifelong learning.

Elective Course (2 credit-units)

Students have the opportunity to pursue an elective course, allowing them to explore an area of personal or professional interest.

Mental Health First Aid

This accredited course by The Mental Health Association of Hong Kong (MHAHK) empowers all Year 1 undergraduate students to recognize early signs of mental health issues and seek timely support to prevent deterioration.

Career Prospects & Professional Recognition

Graduates who successfully complete the Bachelor of Nursing with Honours in General Health Care programme are eligible to apply for registration as Registered Nurses (General) with the Nursing Council of Hong Kong.

Registered nurses are qualified to work in a wide range of healthcare settings, including public and private hospitals, primary healthcare services, residential care facilities, and non-governmental organisations.

Graduates from the General Health Care stream are prepared to deliver patient-centered nursing care across diverse clinical areas and service settings.

With clinical experience and further education, graduates may progress into specialist roles, leadership positions, or nursing education.
