Master of Nursing with specialization in Advanced Respiratory Nursing (MNARNF) / Management and Leadership (MNMLF)

Introduction

With the growing demand for healthcare services due to demographic trend of longevity, complexity of diseases spectrum, and rapid development of medical technologies, the advancement of professional competence of nurses is needed. It is imperative for nurses not only assuming a more advanced role, but also engaging in the functions and responsibilities with expanded scope and increased complexity. It has been recognized as a global trend to promote advanced and specialized nursing practice.

This programme is designed for nurses who are planning to enhance their professional development in the specialty area:

Specialization in Advanced Respiratory Nursing:

Nurses who are currently working in Respiratory Unit, Medicine and Geriatrics Unit, High Dependency Unit, Ventilator Care Unit or those who are interested in respiratory nursing.

Specialization in Management and Leadership:

Nurses who are interested to develop the skills, knowledge and attributes required for leadership and management roles in healthcare.

Programme Characteristics

The aim of the programme is to equip students with requisite knowledge, skills and competencies for advanced nursing practice in a specialty area. A variety of teaching and learning strategies will be adopted to provide the best learning experience for students. Examples of teaching and learning strategies are lectures, seminars, tutorials, laboratory session, simulation learning and clinical visits. The programme adopts advanced simulation education which offers a realistic and immersive learning experiences for students.

Programme Intended Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this programme, students should be able to:

  • Apply the updated knowledge and skills in providing holistic care to clients in the specialty area;
  • Demonstrate the role of advanced practice nurse safely, legally and ethically;
  • Assume the roles of nursing management in the complex healthcare environment;
  • Demonstrate leadership to develop new initiatives for quality and safety in nursing practice;
  • Appraise critically the research evidence to guide nursing practice;
  • Apply scientific methods to inquire and resolve challenges in nursing practice.

Programme Mode and Duration of Study

The programme is presented in face-to-face mode. The study duration will be one year on a full-time basis or two years on a part-time basis. The maximum period of study is three years for full-time students or four years for part-time students.

Medium of Instruction

The medium of instruction of the programme is English.

Programme Structure

Students are expected to study three core courses, four specialty courses in each specialization and a capstone project.

Entry Requirements

  • Be a Registered Nurse with valid professional and practicing certificates issued by Nursing Council of Hong Kong (for Hong Kong applicants); or
  • Be a nurse with recognized professional and practicing qualification issued by the relevant professional body outside Hong Kong (for non-local applicants); and
  • Holding a recognized Bachelor's degree in Nursing or health-related discipline; and
  • Fulfil the University's English language proficiency requirements.

Career Prospects & Professional Recognition *

  • Graduates who satisfactorily completed all programme requirements will be awarded a Master’s degree in Nursing.
  • Graduates with cumulative clinical experience may subsequently experience career development as advanced practice nurse, nurse manager or leader in healthcare setting.

* Completion of this programme would not lead to eligibility of registering as Registered Nurse (RN) with the Nursing Council of Hong Kong.
