Introduction

This programme is designed to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to enter the medical laboratory field upon graduation. It offers comprehensive academic and professional training in medical laboratory science, adhering to the standards set forth by the Hong Kong Medical Laboratory Technologists Board. The programme is supported by Education Bureau under “Enhancement and Start-up Grant Scheme”. The accreditation process for the programme by the Board is currently in progress, with the initial assessment visit by the Board's assessment panel having been completed on 3 July 2025.

Programme Aims

Upon successfully completing the programme, students should be able to:

  • Conclude MLS concepts and principles in a real setting, consistent with local and global standards
  • Demonstrate leadership and collaboration in the performance of laboratory diagnostic work for effective healthcare delivery.
  • Illustrate analytical and critical skills in identifying and resolving health problems and issues by applying different research approaches.
  • Create innovative knowledge to improve the quality of the healthcare industry through research and inquiry.
  • Employ ethical and professional work standards in the performance of laboratory procedures, equipped toward benefit to the society.
  • Illustrate proficiency in utilizing the distinctive communication platforms as applied to the medical laboratory profession in both local and global contexts.
  • Demonstrate compelling communication skills and be capable in both Chinese and English, acquire general educations as well as good interpersonal skills and collaboration aptitudes.
  • Relate social awareness and understanding of the community roles and value of the medical laboratory profession in terms of missions and impact in Hong Kong.

Programme Features

The field of medical laboratory science is comprised of five major disciplines: clinical hematology and transfusion science, clinical chemistry and immunology, medical microbiology, anatomical and cellular pathology, and molecular diagnostics. Other sub-specialties within the five main disciplines are taught and trained throughout the curriculum as well.

    Applicants who are shortlisted will be invited to an admission interview. Passing this interview is essential for the application to be deemed successful.

Programme Structure

Year 1 Entry only

To earn the Bachelor of Science with Honours in Medical Laboratory Science (BSCHMLS), students must complete 135 credit-units of prescribed courses.

These courses comprise:

  • 6 credit-units of University English courses,
  • 6 credit-units of General Education courses,
  • 9 credit-units of University Core courses, and
  • 114 credit-units of programme courses.

Career Prospects & Professional Recognition

The professional programme is structured to meet the accreditation criteria established by the Hong Kong Medical Laboratory Technologists Board.

To be eligible for registration as a Medical Laboratory Technologist with the Board, students are required to achieve a grade of C or higher in all the core courses in the programme upon graduation.
