Facilities for Special Educational Needs

The Library is providing the following facilities and activities to support users with Special Education Needs (SEN):

SEN Workstation* and Equipment (On level 2 of the Stanley Ho Library):
- LCD electronic magnifier –
  creating a good reading environment by adjust user's needs whether the reading, writing or graphic viewing;
- Braille translator –
  performing translation between Braille and plain text easily to overcome the visual obstacles in learning and researching;
- OpenBook OCR printer and scanner –
  converting printed documents into an electronic text format on computer; and
- Braille Display (Focus 40 Blue) –
  accessing Braille to control computer.

* The SEN workstation can be booked by calling the Library at 2768 6778 or contacting staff at the Service Counter.

SEN Software:
- JAWS 2025 (a screen-reading software with a text-to-speech output or by a refreshable Braille display);
- ZoomText 2025 (a screen-reading software that combines magnification and reading features);
- 光學文字辨識(OCR)軟件 (a software to convert the scanned documents into text files);
- Speechnotes (a speech to text online notepad);
- NVDA (a screen-reading software); and
- BRITE 亮點 (a versatile Braille translation editing program that enables seamless two-way translation between Braille and regular text).
Barrier Free Facilities:
- Accessible entrance/exit;
- Accessible lift;
- Wheelchaired stair lift;
- Accessible service counter and discussion table with height suitable;
- Accessible Toilets;
- CityGeni mobile app; and
- Audio and visual signals of the emergency alarm system / Visual Fire Alarm System.
Various activities in collaboration with the Student Affairs Office (SAO) for relaxation and cosiness for mental health:
- “1-day U-life Experience @HKMU” for your patients with rare diseases to promote care and inclusion on campus (February 2025)
- Theme Talk Series with Therapy Animals (March 2025);

  - Yoga Class (October 2025)
  - Woof & Mood, Understanding Emotions Through Dogs (October 2025)
  - Theme Talk related to Dietitian (October 2025)

The facilities for special educational needs, including LCD electronic magnifier, Braille translator, and OpenBook OCR printer and scanner, are located on Level 2 of the Stanley Ho Library. Students can book the workstations or borrow the Braille Display (Focus 40 Blue) by calling the Library at 2768 6778 or contacting staff at the Service Counter.

“Smart City Walk” mobile app

The “Smart City Walk” mobile app is developed by the Hong Kong Blind Union. The App provides audio and text navigation for some outdoor and indoor venues in Hong Kong which allows people-in-need to walk around independently. Venue partners include government departments, shopping malls and hospitals. HKMU and its Library are the first higher education institution and library in Hong Kong to participate in the “Smart City Walk” project. The App can help users to know the major services provided by the Library, identify his/her current location in the Library and provide navigation to the specific destination.
