Co-organised by the HKMU Ina Ho Cantonese Opera Research Centre, the Chinese Music Project, and the University Library, the event “Chinese Strings Hum Operatic Rhymes; Scholarly Spirits Cradle the Stage” was held successfully. The rich programme of the day allowed the audience to fully experience the unique charm of Chinese music and Cantonese opera.

Event Highlights:

🎶 Chinese Music Performance: Students from the HKMU Chinese Music Project delivered their very first public performance, presenting spectacular instrumental ensembles “Dance of Joy” and “Dragon Dance” under the baton of conductor Mr Sebastian LAI. In addition, Bachelor of Nursing student Ms LI Tsz-ching performed a beautiful Guzheng solo, “Spring on Xiang River”.

🎤 Cantonese Opera Singing: We were highly honoured to have Professor LUI Yu-hon and Dr Kelly CHAN Kar-yue perform three classic Cantonese opera excerpts from “The Flower Princess”, “The Legend of the Purple Hairpin”, and “Romance of the Phoenix Chamber”, with live accompaniment by the HKMU Chinese Music Project ensemble!

📖 Book Launch: Dr CHAN Chi-chun and Dr Kelly CHAN Kar-yue introduced two new publications on Cantonese opera research: “實踐與未來——粵劇的創新、傳承與發展” (Practices and Future: The Innovation, Heritage, and Development of Cantonese Opera) and “Cantonese Opera Singing Styles in Hong Kong”.

Thank you to all our guest performers and the audience for supporting this event. If you missed the performances, there is no need to worry. You can still experience the cultural charm by visiting the ongoing “Resplendent Attire and Graceful Demeanor” Cantonese Opera Costume Exhibition at the Ho Sik Yee Library to continue exploring the profound heritage of Cantonese opera!
