Portable Precision: Ultrasound Applications in Geriatric Care

Abstract

Ultrasound is increasingly recognised as a valuable bedside tool in geriatric medicine, offering clinicians a rapid, non invasive means of supporating timely decisions and enhancing patient assessment. This one hour workshop is designed for individuals interested in learning or improving ultrasound scanning skills in everyday geriatric practice.
The session will begin with a concise overview of ultrasound principles, highlighting their relevance to the unique needs of elderly people. Participants will then observe live demonstrations using portable ultrasound devices, showcasing how point of care imaging can complement clinical judgment in real world scenarios. Under guided supervision, attendees will have the opportunity to handle the devices themselves and gain hands on exposure to scanning three key anatomical regions: the abdomen, pelvis, and carotid arteries.
The emphasis throughout is on experiential learning rather than formal certification. By engaging directly with the technology, participants will develop a clearer appreciation of how ultrasound works, observe its immediate clinical utility, and deepen their understanding of its potential role in geriatric care. The workshop provides a safe and respectful environment for exploration, encouraging curiosity and confidence in using ultrasound as a supportive tool.
By the end of the session, attendees will leave with practical insights into the everyday applications of bedside ultrasound, a first hand sense of scanning techniques, and an enhanced awareness of how this accessible technology can enrich patient care in geriatric settings.

Technological Tranquility: Integrating Mindfulness and Gerontechnology for Older Adults

Abstract

In an increasingly digital world, integrating gerontechnology into daily life offers unique opportunities to enhance well-being and quality of life for older adults. This workshop aims to combine traditional mindfulness techniques with immersive virtual reality (VR) technology to promote mindfulness practice, foster relaxation, and improve mental well-being.
Participants will begin by defining mindfulness and exploring its core principles, establishing a foundational understanding of its significance for both physical and mental health in older adults. They will learn specific mindful breathing techniques and their effectiveness in reducing stress and enhancing emotional resilience.
The workshop will introduce the evolution of gerontechnology in mindfulness practices, including the development of VR-based mindfulness interventions, and highlight both the benefits and potential challenges of their integration. Participants will engage in hands-on experiences with immersive VR technologies, practicing self-guided and instructor-led mindful breathing exercises designed to enhance relaxation and alleviate symptoms of stress and anxiety.
The broader impacts of immersive VR-based mindfulness intervention on overall well-being will also be discussed. Through theoretical input, sharing, and practical exercises, participants will reflect on their experiences and deepen their understanding of mindfulness in the context of modern technology. Join us for this workshop to explore how integrating immersive virtual reality with mindfulness can transform the lives of older adults.
