Programme Introduction

The Master of Education in English Language Education programme seeks to develop in learners the ability to evaluate advanced literature, identify problems and design research strategies, and reflect on the significance of theory for practice.

Programme Aims

Upon completing the programme, students should be able to:

  • critically review and evaluate knowledge and perspectives in the area of study based on relevant theories and research findings in the international literature;

  • apply new understanding and research findings to reflect on their practice and make suggestions for improvement;

  • demonstrate leadership in the school context in the area of study;

  • design, conduct and report on a small-scale research project in the area of study;

  • use a variety of appropriate methods for collecting, compiling and analysing data; and

  • apply understanding of English as a linguistic system for planning and organizing effective English language learning.

Professional Recognition

The Master of Education in English Language Education programme is approved by the Education Bureau of the Hong Kong SAR government:

  • as a recognized English language major degree programme;
  • as a qualification meeting the language proficiency requirement for English language teachers; and
  • for the Professional Development Incentive Grant Scheme for Language Teachers.

Programme Structure and Content

Autumn 2023 intake and thereafter

Students are required to complete 30 credit-units of courses, which comprises 27 credit-units of core courses and at least 3 credit-units of elective courses^, to fulfill the graduation requirements.

Core Courses (Total 27 credit-units)

  • English studies for language teaching
  • Investigating English in Context
  • Interdisciplinary studies for English language learning and teaching
  • Applied linguistics and English language
  • Understanding educational practice: Concepts, theories and changing contexts

Elective Courses^ (Total 3 credit-units)

  • Quantitative research methods in educational studies
  • Qualitative research methods in educational studies

^ Courses that will be offered may vary from year to year.

Entry Requirement

Students admitted to the programme are required to have obtained:

(a) a recognised Bachelor’s degree (or its equivalent); and
(b) preferably a recognised teaching qualification and/or work experience in English language teaching.

Language proficiency requirements

Applicants whose Bachelor’s degrees or equivalent qualifications were obtained from programmes where the medium of instruction is not English must meet one of the following English language proficiency requirements, including:

  • TOEFL*^ : minimum acceptable score of 550 (paper-based test) or 79 (internet-based test); or
  • IELTS*^ : minimum acceptable score of 6.5; or
  • CET-6*: minimum acceptable score of 500; or
  • an equivalent score in a recognised test #.

* Test results are accepted for up to 2 years from the test date until the application form submission date.

^ Test result of TOEFL iBT Home edition or IELTS Online is not accepted.

# Equivalent qualifications to prove an applicant’s language proficiency may be considered on a case-by-case basis;

Short-listed applicants will be invited to an admission interview, and only those who pass the interview will be admitted to the programme.
