This double award programme is designed specifically for those people who have the career goal of becoming a secondary school English teacher in Hong Kong. Through the programme you will gain a solid foundation in language proficiency, English studies and learning skills as well as professional skills in English teaching.
The programme starts by constructing a solid foundation of language proficiency and understanding upon which to build progressively more demanding studies of different aspects of the English language. We aim to develop in all students an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the language. Integrated with your studies of language will be education courses developing you as a reflective teacher, knowledgeable about the curriculum, able to design effective learning experiences for students and to implement them effectively using a repertoire of teaching skills.
The programme provides complete preparation for language teaching and is listed by the Education Bureau as a Recognised Language Major Degree. Successful completion of the programme gives you full exemption from the Language Proficiency Requirement for English Teachers and the status of a fully qualified English teacher in Hong Kong.
This programme leads to two qualifications: a Bachelor’s Degree with Honours and a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Secondary). There are three pathways for students pursuing this programme. Pathways 2 and 3 are specifically designed for holders of an Associate Degree or equivalent qualification.
BLSHPGDES1 — Pathway 1
Programme-specific entry requirements:
(a) Level 2 or Grade E or above in English Language and Chinese Language in the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination, the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education, or equivalent; and
satisfactory performance in a selection interview.
Students pursuing this programme through Pathway 1 must successfully complete 190 credits as follows:

(b)
25 additional credits from any Foundation, Middle or Higher level course offered by the University, of which no more than 20 credits are at Foundation level.
Advanced standing/Credit exemption
Students with recognized tertiary qualifications may apply for advanced standing/credit exemption.
BLSHPGDES2 — Pathway 2 (for holders of an Associate Degree or equivalent qualification)</strong >
Programme-specific entry requirements:
a recognized Associate Degree, or equivalent, in English studies or a related area; and
satisfactory performance in a selection interview.
Students pursuing this programme through Pathway 2 must successfully complete 125 credits as follows:

10 additional credits from any Middle or Higher level courses offered by the University.
Field experience and teaching practicum
Students aiming to obtain the BLSHPGDES should note that they must:
Complete teaching practice in assigned schools for six weeks as full-time student-teachers when they pursue each of two courses with teaching practicums (i.e. 12 weeks in total).
In addition, they should be able to gain access to at least one school teacher and a few school students and conduct interviews with them (for EDU E100).
Recognition
Graduates of this programme will hold an EDB recognized language major degree and teacher qualification. They will also have met the requirement for exemption from the Language Proficiency Requirement for English Language Teachers.
The programme includes courses in education, language teaching, language proficiency, language studies and in the use of information technology for learning. If you are new to university study you should start your studies with foundation courses in English language, information technology for learning and education as well as taking the middle level language studies course, ENGL A202:

Apart from EDU E100, courses in education and teaching methodology are best left until later in your study schedule so that you can draw on the strong foundation of language skill and knowledge you will have acquired by that stage.
