From fond memories of college days to careers after graduation, our double-degree graduates reminisce about the pathways they have been through.
Jenny Ng, graduated in 2020 | a primary school teacher
MaggieLo Tsz Yui, graduated in 2020 | a primary school teacher
I am Maggie Lo Tsz Yui, one of the graduates of the BEd (Hons) in English Language Teaching and BEngLang (Hons) programme and am currently teaching in a Catholic primary school in Hong Kong.
The programme has afforded me plenty opportunities to enhance my English proficiency and become a more competent teacher.
The courses related to educational psychology, special educational needs and Information Technology in learning and teaching have equipped me with adequate skills and theories to gain better understanding of the students, design suitable and interesting teaching materials as well as to tackle with difficulties.
Teaching practicums in both primary and secondary schools, lasting for 22 weeks in total, are also provided in the programme. They have given me valuable opportunities to gain teaching experience in a school setting. Most significantly, I have learnt how to support students with Special Educational Needs and worked in a team of teachers to meet tight marking deadlines efficiently, as well as the techniques of making various eye-catching teaching aids and e-learning materials to facilitate learning.

Carl Carabio, graduated in 2014 | a secondary school teacher
More often than not, whenever I reminisce about my stay at the Open University of Hong Kong, I can’t help but smile.
One reason I smile is because I was nurtured well by my hard-working and dedicated lecturers and tutors who, at their utmost best, patiently answered however mediocre my questions might be. I was challenged to think critically, a skill that I see indispensable in my line of work. Also, I consider myself a successful teacher because of the guidance and care from these devoted individuals.
Another reason I smile whenever I look back at my days at OUHK are the people I met in my classes. In spite of our differences, we learned to accept and appreciate each other’s differences. I have learned a plethora of life skills based on their experiences and without their life stories, I wouldn’t be as sensitive or aware about the world of work.
Finally, I smile because I graduated from a university that shaped me and led me to where I am now. I was well-equipped to take on my calling as an English teacher. It all turned out fine for me.
I was nurtured well by my hard-working and dedicated lecturers and tutors. In spite of our differences, we learned to accept and appreciate each other's differences.
HKMU has afforded me a lot of opportunities to advance my language skills, study abroad and pursue my further studies.
"The heart of education is the education of the heart" - one of my teachers told me.
The immersion programme and different courses offered here have enhanced my English proficiency and cultivated in me a positive attitude of being a teacher.
