About this Programme

The Bachelor of Education with Honours in English Language Teaching and Bachelor of English Language Studies with Honours (BEd(Hons)&BEngLang(Hons)) is a double-degree programme offered by the School of Education and Languages. By extending study into two summer vacations, students will be able to complete five years’ work within four years and obtain two honours degrees – one in English Studies and one in Education (English Language Teaching).

The double degree programme aims to develop a good understanding of the structure, use and learning of the English language, and sound professional knowledge and skills required of an English language teacher.

Programme Highlights

  • Graduate in four years taking two summer terms in Years 2 and 3
  • Gain working experience and valuable credential at school through the unique internship-cum-teaching practice arrangement lasting for one full term in Year 3
  • Participate in a self-financed overseas immersion and credit-bearing program in leading UK universities (e.g. Warwick) with scholarship and bursary plentifully available

Entrance Requirements

There are various admission routes to the programme. For the latest specific entrance requirements and application, please visit the Undergraduate Admissions website HERE.

A good command of English language, usually pitched at Level 4 or above on HKDSE, will facilitate studying in the programme. Applicants who have attained an overall Level 3 but a Level 4 or above in oral English will be considered compassionately. The following subject(s) will carry a greater weight in admission score calculation: English Language.

Career Prospects & Further Studies

By holding two degrees, graduates will be fully qualified English language teachers, recognized by the Education Bureau as:

  • having a language (English) major degree; and
  • holding a teacher’s qualification in teaching English.

Graduates will be exempted from the Language Proficiency Requirement for Teachers of English.

Graduates will also be eligible to take up general administrative and executive work in the civil service, non-government organizations, business or industry sectors, and other positions for university graduates.

Many opportunities are available for graduates of the programme to undertake postgraduate studies in Hong Kong and overseas. Some students will continue to study for a Master’s degree by course work or by research in areas such as linguistics, applied linguistics, TESOL, translation and journalism.
