CiCea Awards Seed Funding for Four‑Society Study on Education for “Good Citizenship”

Dr. Eric Chong, Head of the Department of Education, School of Education and Languages, has been awarded a seed funding by the Children's Identity and Citizenship European Association (CiCea) to lead a four‑society comparative study on how school teachers understand and teach “good citizenship.”

This international research project brings together scholars from Hong Kong, Hungary, Turkey, and Greece to explore how teachers interpret the concept of “good citizenship” and the ways they put these ideas into practice in citizenship or civics classrooms. By drawing on teachers' qualitative perspectives, the study aims to generate insights that will benefit curriculum planners, practitioners, and education researchers working in citizenship education.

The co-investigators are:

  • Prof. Márta Fülöp, Institute for Cognitive Neuroscience and Psychology, Research Centre of Natural Sciences, Hungary
  • Prof. Dr. Nilüfer Pembecioğlu, Istanbul University, Turkey
  • Dr. Thodoris Vavitsas, Higher School of Pedagogical and Technological Education, Volos, Greece

Running from January to December 2026, the project is expected to produce journal publications and conference presentations that contribute to global conversations on citizenship education.
