School of Education and Languages, HKMU Hosts Professional Speech Contests to Nurture Trilingual Communicators and Future Leaders

The School of Education and Languages at Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) successfully hosted the Professional Speech Contests of Toastmasters International Areas G2 and G4 on 28 February 2026. The event was co-organised by HKMU Trilingual Toastmasters Club in collaboration with Toastmasters International District 89, showcasing the University's strong support for public speaking education and leadership development in a trilingual environment. The contests attracted enthusiastic participation and support from Toastmasters leaders, club members and guests, marking the occasion as a notable success.

The contests featured five categories: Mandarin Speech, Cantonese Humorous Speech, Table Topics Speech, Evaluation Speech and International Speech. Five members of HKMU Trilingual Toastmasters Club participated in the contests: Mau Yik Lam (牟奕霖) and Mai Wei-lun (麥瑋倫) in Mandarin Speech; Terry Kwok Hau Tak (郭孝德) in Table Topics Speech; Terry Kwok Hau Tak and Tom Kwok Pak Hei (郭柏羲) in Evaluation Speech; and Vincent Shen You-cheng (沈宥騁) and Terry Kwok Hau Tak in International Speech. All contestants delivered strong performances, demonstrating the club's commitment to nurturing confident and competent communicators.

Three HKMU contestants received awards, including Mai Wei-lun (麥瑋倫), who obtained 2nd Place in the G2 Putonghua Speech Contest; Terry Kwok Hau Tak (郭孝德), who achieved 1st Place in the G2 Table Topics Speech, 2nd Place in Evaluation Speech and International Speech Contests; and Tom Kwok Pak Hei (郭柏羲), who placed third in the G2 Evaluation Speech Contest. These awardees will advance to the Division G Speech Contests on 11 April 2026.

The event concluded with closing remarks by Prof. Andy Chin Chi-on, Dean of the School of Education and Languages, who expressed gratitude to the Contest Chair Dr Augustine Chow, Chief Judge Ms Kelly Chan, Division G Director Ms Karry Yeung, club advisors Dr Ivan Sin and Ms Catherine Wong, as well as members of HKMU Trilingual Toastmasters Club for their support and dedicated efforts. Prof. Chin also highlighted HKMU's mission in training effective communicators and young leaders, and emphasised the University's commitment to collaborating with the community to nurture the trilingual development of Hong Kong.
