Distance Learning programmes work on a flexible credit accumulation basis. Registration at the University is normally done by programme of study. To obtain an award, students are required to follow the regulations governing the programme of study, which outline the number of credits and the courses they need to complete.
Programme Regulations may be updated from time to time. Students are advised to check and obtain a copy of the most up-to-date regulations by referring to “Programme Regulations (5-credit System)” or “Programme Requirements (3-credit-unit System)” on HKMU website. Students are also advised to contact your Programme Leader for matters related to your studies.
Each course has a unique course code that includes a 'subject' to indicate the area of 'academic discipline', 'offering school', 'course level' and 'medium of instruction'.
Courses normally run for one or two terms. Students' success in each course is assessed through continuous assessment and examinations. With the exception of a few courses, each course normally carries a credit value. Upon successfully completing a course, the corresponding credits/credit-units will be added to students' record. Students can obtain respective award when they have accumulated enough credits/credit-units for the appropriate level of award as prescribed.

Subject: ACT represents the subject Accounting Number (composed of one letter and three numbers): The letter indicates the School offering the course: A: School of Arts and Social Sciences B: Lee Shau Kee School of Business and Administration E: School of Education and Languages N: School of Nursing and Health Studies S: School of Sciences and Technology The 1st number signifies the level of the subject: 0* or 1: Pre-foundation/Foundation level 2: Middle level 3 or 4:Higher level 8 or 9: Postgraduate level The 2nd and 3rd numbers are serial numbers assigned to the course which may be different from the current course code. In this example, B represents the offering School is Lee Shau Kee School of Business and Administration, and the first number, 4, indicates that the course is a Higher (Honours) level course. A course code with a suffix 'C' indicates that Chinese is used as the medium of instruction; a course code with a suffix 'B' indicates that the course is bilingual; all others (i.e. those without a suffix 'C' or 'B') are in English. A course code with a suffix 'F' indicates that the course is delivered mainly in the face-to-face mode. *Some courses have no credit value attached to them. The course code of these courses also starts with '0'. |

To nurture students with the four University's core values (integrity, fairness, perseverance, and innovation), foster a sense of social responsibilities, enhance their communication skills, and cultivate an entrepreneurial mindset, undergraduate students under 3-credit-unit System shall be required to complete four credit-units bearing University Core Courses for graduation. Students are advised to check the programme requirements by referring to “Programme Requirements (3-credit-unit System)”.

HKMU's programmes lead to undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. Many of the programmes also have early exit points, e.g. sub-degrees and ordinary degrees. Students may consider obtaining a lower award before completing additional credits and satisfying the requirements for the higher award.
