Following the donation of HK$3 million from the Tin Ka Ping Foundation (Foundation) last year, The Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK) has just received another gift of HK$5 million from the Foundation to support a series of new initiatives of its Tin Ka Ping Centre of Chinese Culture to promote Chinese culture.
OUHK President Prof. Yuk-Shan Wong thanked the Foundation for its tremendous support. In addition to promoting Chinese culture, Prof. Wong hoped that students' cultural appreciation and cultivation of moral values could be further enhanced through their participation in creative arts activities. The University will make best use of the donation and its existing resources and facilities to launch a series of new initiatives, which will integrate various elements of Chinese culture, creative arts and general education programmes to enhance the aspirations to appreciate Chinese culture amongst the youths.
These new initiatives include an “Artists-Creative-Arts-Students Crossover” programme in which experts, scholars and artists in different Chinese arts areas will be invited to collaborate with the OUHK students to work on new arts pieces or projects. Roving exhibitions displaying all the finished works will be held at the OUHK library, exhibition gallery as well as external organizations. The Centre will also invite teachers and students of selected secondary schools to join related workshops to enhance students' art appreciation from text to images, training their creativity, execution, imagination and sensitivity of applying text and images to different media.
To promote cultural and academic exchanges between Hong Kong and the mainland, the Centre will invite scholars, teaching staff and students from the mainland institutions to visit the OUHK. Academic workshops, conferences, talks and forums will also be arranged. The University will also plan to launch new general education programmes in Chinese literature, culture, arts, philosophy and history to offer more options for its full-time students to develop a better understanding of the core values of Chinese history and culture.
The Tin Ka Ping Foundation has been an ardent supporter of the development of the OUHK since 1996. With this donation, it has donated more than HK$18 million to the University in support of many meaningful projects including offering bursaries to financially disadvantaged learners and prison inmates, supporting the Phase II campus development project, as well as setting up of the “Mainland China Visiting Scholars Exchange Programme” to sponsor scholars and academics from the mainland to come to Hong Kong for research, training and academic exchange activities. With the generous gift of the Foundation last year, the University launched the “Moral and Chinese Cultural Education Programme” to facilitate students’ whole-person development through a series of sports and cultural activities.
The OUHK Tin Ka Ping Centre of Chinese Culture was established in 2015 with the support of Tin Ka Ping Foundation. Housed under the School of Arts and Social Sciences, the Centre aims to promote Chinese culture on campus and to a wider community through organizing an array of public lectures and cultural activities related to performing arts, film culture, arts and crafts, academic insights and literature and arts.
